Chapter 13: The Aftermath

The federal marshals arrived twenty minutes later, securing the perimeter not to arrest Thomas, but to execute a federal search and seizure warrant on Apex Biomechanics. Federal investigators swarmed the white-walled laboratories, bagging server drives, confiscating prototype schematics, and placing the corporate executives under immediate detention for fraudulent medical trials and gross safety violations.

Outside in the crisp night air, the flashing red and blue lights of the federal vehicles painted the asphalt in rhythmic pulses. Sarah Vance stood beside the open door of the medical transport van, checking Leo over with a diagnostic light while he sat wrapped in a warm wool blanket on the back step.

"Vitals are stable, no muscle tearing, and his blood pressure is normalizing," Sarah announced with a relieved smile, looking up at Thomas who stood leaning against the side of the van. "You gave us quite a scare, Commander."

"It's over now," Thomas said, exhaling a long, slow breath that he felt like he had been holding for months.

"Not entirely," a new voice said from the shadows near the parking lot.

A tall man in a dark federal suit walked into the pool of light cast by the van's interior lamp. He flashed a Department of Justice badge before slipping it back into his jacket pocket. "Commander Vance. I'm Special Agent Miller, Federal Inspector General's office."

Thomas straightened instinctively, adopting a neutral, respectful posture. "Agent Miller."

"Your emergency broadcast triggered a full-scale federal investigation into Apex Biomechanics six hours ahead of our scheduled raid," Miller said, eyeing the retired officer with a mixture of professional respect and stern caution. "You broke federal property laws, breached a secure corporate facility, and threatened armed confrontation."

"I recovered my son from an unlawful abduction by corporate operatives who were covering up a dangerous product defect," Thomas replied without flinching. "File whatever charges you deem appropriate, Agent. My testimony will be part of the public record either way."

Miller studied him for a moment, then gave a faint, almost imperceptible nod. "The Department has decided that given the circumstances—and the sheer volume of incriminating evidence your telemetry logs provided—all charges against you will be dropped under the whistle-blower protection clauses of the federal health code. As for Apex Biomechanics, they're facing criminal indictments that will put them out of business by morning."

Leo looked up from his blanket, his tear-stained face catching the light of the emergency vehicles. "Does that mean... nobody else has to wear those broken braces?"

Miller looked down at the young boy with genuine warmth. "Because of what you and your father did, every clinical trial involving those prototypes has been permanently shut down nationwide. No one else will have to go through what you went through, Leo."
