Chapter 15

The morning sun broke clear and brilliant over Maple Street, painting the autumn leaves in shades of amber and gold as a gentle breeze rustled through the oak trees. Inside the small, white house, the atmosphere was charged with a quiet, vibrant energy that marked the end of one grueling chapter and the thrilling beginning of another. Julian stood in front of the hallway mirror, adjusting the collar of his civilian button-down shirt—clean, pressed, and entirely free of military insignia or tactical patches. His right leg still wore the mechanical brace, but he moved with a fluid, confident stride that ignored the dull ache in his knee joint.
In the kitchen, Clara was busy pouring two cups of coffee, moving independently with her cane resting lightly against the counter. Her fiberglass boot was gone, replaced by a comfortable walking shoe, and her posture was straight and proud. As Julian walked into the kitchen, she handed him a steaming mug with a bright, affectionate smile.
“You look entirely too respectable for a Monday morning, Mr. State Coordinator,” Clara teased lightly, taking a sip of her coffee.
Julian chuckled, wrapping his arm around her shoulders and giving her a gentle hug. “First day on the job training, Mom. I promised my supervisor I’d show up on time, and a Vance never breaks a promise.”
“Just make sure you remember to eat lunch instead of staring at logistics spreadsheets all day,” Clara retorted with her characteristic dry humor, though her eyes shone with undisguised pride.
