Chapter 12: The Gala Scandal

Saturday night arrived with a heavy downpour that slicked the asphalt of the downtown streets. Inside the glittering grand ballroom of the city’s premier hotel, Eleanor stood near the entrance in a breathtaking emerald velvet gown, greeting senators, corporate executives, and society columnists with her signature icy charm. The annual charity gala was her crowning achievement, a night designed to showcase her philanthropy, her flawless family, and her untouchable social standing.
Only one detail was missing: Julian and Amy.
As the evening progressed toward the keynote address, society columnists began whispering behind their crystal champagne flutes. Where was Julian, the golden boy of the firm and the designated heir to the foundation? When a prominent journalist casually asked Eleanor about her son’s absence during a live interview with the local news network, Eleanor’s carefully constructed composure flickered for a fraction of a second.
Instead of gracefully deflecting, Eleanor made a fatal miscalculation born of unchecked arrogance. She looked directly into the camera lens and allowed a patronizing smile to touch her lips. “My son is currently going through a temporary, regrettable phase of youthful rebellion,” she said smoothly, her voice carrying across the silent ballroom. “He has chosen to isolate himself with an unsuitable partner who lacks the fortitude required to navigate our world. I have no doubt he will eventually realize his mistake and return to his rightful place once he regains his senses.”
The broadcast went out live to hundreds of thousands of viewers across the state, including Julian and Amy, who were sitting comfortably on their living room sofa sharing a bowl of popcorn while Leo slept soundly in the next room.
Julian stared at the television screen, watching his mother publicly humiliate his wife on live television to save face before the elite. The last lingering shreds of familial obligation evaporated instantly, replaced by a cold, crystal-clear clarity. He didn't feel angry anymore; he felt liberated.
“Well,” Julian said quietly, picking up his phone from the coffee table. “That seals it.”

“What are you doing?” Amy asked, watching the determined glint in his eye.
“Writing a public statement,” Julian replied, his thumbs flying across the screen. “Not just to the media, but to the board of directors, the foundation trustees, and every single person in that room. It’s time the world learned how Eleanor maintains her precious empire.”
