Chapter 8: The Desperate Pounding

The frantic pounding on the front door next door continued to echo across the quiet suburban lawn, breaking the midnight stillness with desperate urgency. Clara watched calmly through the living room window as the father pounded his fist against the wood once more, his face contorted with panic under the harsh glare of the porch light. Grandpa could be seen hovering nervously in the background, pacing back and forth near the azalea bushes, clutching a battered leather briefcase containing what little personal cash and hard-copy documents they had managed to salvage.
Chloe stood up from the sofa, her hands trembling slightly as she gripped the back of the velvet armchair. ""Should we... should we call the police now?"" she asked, her voice laced with understandable apprehension. ""What if they try to break our windows?""
""Let them try,"" Clara replied firmly, her tone radiating absolute control. She walked over to the front entrance and flipped a wall switch, illuminating the exterior security floodlights that bathed the front yard in a sharp, clinical brightness. ""If they step one foot onto my property with malicious intent, we won't just be filing civil paperwork tomorrow; we’ll be filing immediate trespassing and harassment charges. But right now, they are sweating through their clothes because they realize midnight is approaching, and they have nowhere to go.""
Clara opened her front door just a few inches, leaving the security chain latched firmly in place. She didn't yell; she didn't show anger. She simply looked out with cold, professional detachment.
""You need to open this door right now!"" the father shouted, his voice cracking hysterically as he leaned toward the narrow crack. ""You’ve ruined everything! Olivia is crying in the motel room, and my father is having chest pains! Give us back our house key, or I swear we will make your life a living hell!""
""Your time is up,"" Clara replied evenly, her voice cutting through his hysterical threats with surgical precision. ""You have exactly until midnight to vacate the premises completely. The local precinct has already received copies of the property trust deed and the embezzlement audit. Every minute you spend lingering on that porch is another minute added to your criminal record. I suggest you pack your blue minivan and leave before the patrol cars arrive.""
""You have no authority!"" Grandpa yelled, shoving his son aside and stepping directly into the path of the floodlight. His face was flushed with ancient, bitter rage. ""That house has been in our family for fifty years! You’re an outsider meddling in business that doesn't concern you!""
""It concerns me because Sarah was my dearest friend and cousin, and her daughter is under my legal protection,"" Clara stated, her eyes locking onto the old man with a fierce intensity that made him stammer into silence. ""You traded your family name for greed, and you lost. Midnight is five minutes away. Choose your next move wisely.""

Clara firmly shut the front door, sliding the deadbolt into place with a satisfying, metallic click. The heavy thud resonated through the hallway, symbolizing the permanent closure of an ugly chapter in Chloe’s life. Turning around, Clara found Chloe standing in the hallway, looking remarkably composed, a quiet strength settling into her posture.
