Chapter 1

The diner air smelled of stale grease, brewed coffee, and the sharp copper tang of spilled blood. Elena Vance stood completely still beside the Formica counter, her dark hair pulled back into a severe, practical bun. Her heavy dark blue sweatshirt swallowed her frame, but her presence filled the small room entirely. Around her right hand, a clean white medical bandage wrapped tightly over bruised knuckles and torn skin—the physical receipt of a very bad morning. Across from her, twenty-five-year-old Toby Miller sneered through styled light brown hair, his crimson leather jacket catching the neon hum of the wall clock.

Toby possessed the absolute confidence of a man who had never faced a real consequence in his entire life. Just moments ago, his arrogant shouting had echoed against the greasy windows, dismissing the trembling elderly diner owner, Martha, as a helpless spectator. But Toby had miscalculated. He had shoved Elena aside while trying to flee a minor traffic collision outside, using unnecessary force and breaking property. In doing so, he had crossed a boundary that ordinary civilians rarely understood.

Elena’s fierce gaze locked onto Toby’s dilated pupils. Her nose-to-nose proximity was deliberate, forcing him to look directly into eyes that had witnessed things far worse than a petulant child throwing a temper tantrum. When she spoke, her voice carried a quiet, terrifying certainty that made the hairs on the back of Toby’s neck stand up.

"You touched the wrong woman," Elena said softly.

Toby scoffed, waving a dismissive hand in the air like he was brushing away a gnat. "Run back to your little army job! Nobody gives a damn who you are!" he barked, glancing nervously at the uniform of aging Officer Higgins, who stood paralyzed near the register, unsure of how to handle a situation that had rapidly escalated beyond a routine property dispute.

Yet, Elena did not blink. Her posture remained rock-solid. The diner doors suddenly swung wide open, letting in a sharp gust of autumn wind. A senior military official in a crisp, immaculate dress uniform, weighed down by rows of gleaming medals and wearing a pristine white cap, strode purposefully into the establishment. Flanked by two armed military police officers, the general stopped just short of the counter.

"Attention! You want to see who I am?" the official demanded, his voice slicing through the tense diner atmosphere like a razor.

Toby’s jaw slackened. His arrogant smirk dissolved instantly, replaced by a look of sheer, unadulterated horror as he recognized the insignia. Elena stood silently beside him, her expression an unreadable mask of absolute authority.

"You’ll find out in about thirty seconds," Elena whispered.
