Chapter 12 - The Signature in the Vault

"What did he mean by that?" Ricardo demanded twenty minutes later.

We were inside a locked family conference room on the fourth floor. Vianey was finally asleep on a vinyl loveseat under three warm hospital blankets, her small hand still tangled in the hem of my sweater so I couldn't leave.

Across the table, Detective Miller from the SPD Financial Crimes unit—called in after the CPS worker reported the audio recording—was photographing the pages of my handwritten ledger.

"Three months ago was July," I said, my mind flipping backward through the calendar of the last eighteen months. "Ricardo, what legal documents did you sign in July?"

"July was the third anniversary of Clara's death," Ricardo said slowly, rubbing his forehead below the white bandage. "I was... I barely left my bedroom that week. Adrian brought me the annual trust renewal packet for Vianey's educational endowment."

"Did you read every page before you signed it?" Mara asked gently.

Ricardo stared down at his scarred knuckles. "Adrian is my brother. When Clara died in that car crash, I couldn't even pick out a casket. Adrian handled the estate, the foundation, the press... I trusted him with my life."

"He slipped an irrevocable custodial delegation document underneath the signature pages of the educational trust," I said, the realization hitting me cold. "Under Washington and Swiss private medical reciprocity laws, if a sole surviving parent signs a pre-admission medical proxy for a minor's psychiatric care, the facility's legal team can enforce transport even if the parent tries to revoke it verbally—unless a judge issues an emergency injunction proving fraud in the inducement."

Detective Miller looked up from his notepad. "And family court doesn't open until 9:00 AM."

"Which gives us six hours," Mara said, checking her watch. "And if Adrian's people already have a private medical transport team on the ground at Boeing Field, they won't come to the hospital now that Adrian is in custody. They'll wait until you leave, or they'll file an emergency pick-up order with the county sheriff at 8:00 AM using your real signature."

"Not if we prove the notary stamp on that July document was fraudulent before the courthouse doors open," I said.

Ricardo looked at me in amazement. "Elena, how could you possibly know if the notary stamp was fake?"

"Because in July, you never left the house during the week of Clara's anniversary," I said quietly. "I know, because I brought three meals a day to your bedroom door. No notary public ever came into that house that week. Which means Adrian used an in-house notary at Vance Logistics headquarters to falsify the witness attestation."

"The original hard copies of the July trust packet are in the biometric floor safe inside my executive office at the Vance Tower downtown," Ricardo said, standing up and reaching for the dry clothes Martha had brought him from the house. "And the corporate board meets at 8:30 AM every Thursday to review escrow releases."

"Wait," Detective Miller said, stepping in front of the door. "Mr. Vance, I have a patrol unit locking down your Madison Park estate, and Adrian and Celeste are being booked at the Downtown Precinct right now. Let my guys execute a warrant at your office in the morning."

"By morning, the twelve million is in the Caymans and the digital audit trail on Adrian's workstation will be wiped remotely by his accomplice," I said, standing up smoothly as I gently slid a pillow beneath Vianey's hand. "Remember the man in the grey raincoat? He wasn't arrested here tonight."

Ricardo looked at Detective Miller. "Can your officers keep two armed guards outside this room with my daughter and Martha until sunrise?"

"Consider it done," the detective said.

Forty minutes later, Ricardo, Mara, and I walked into the subterranean executive garage of the Vance Tower in downtown Seattle.

As we stepped into the private elevator and Ricardo pressed his thumb to the biometric scanner for the 42nd floor, the red security light on the panel flashed twice.

And on the closed-circuit security monitor inside the elevator cab, we saw the man in the grey raincoat standing inside Ricardo's 42nd-floor office—pouring a canister of accelerant over the open floor safe.
