Chapter 12: The Courthouse Steps

The flashbulbs outside the county courthouse blinked like strobe lights in the humid morning air as Sylvia Sterling approached the microphone. Dressed in a stark black mourning gown—abandoning her usual ornate beige and floral embroidery—the elderly matriarch projected an image of calculated, tragic betrayal. Her styled grey hair was impeccably coiffed, and her face bore the heavy mask of a wronged grandmother fighting to save her family's honor from greedy interlopers.

"For seventy years, I have dedicated my life to preserving the heritage and integrity of the Sterling name," Sylvia projected into the microphone, her voice trembling with manufactured sorrow that would have earned an Oscar in Hollywood. "Today, my family home has been seized through forged documents, physical intimidation, and the ruthless exploitation of an innocent child by two strangers who care nothing for our legacy."

Reporters shouted overlapping questions, thrusting microphones forward as camera operators zoomed in on Sylvia’s tear-filled eyes. She paused for maximum dramatic effect, playing the victim with chilling precision.

Across the street, parked safely inside a tinted sedan, Clara and Marcus watched the live broadcast on a tablet screen. Clara’s hands rested calmly in her lap. There was no anger left in her chest—only a cold, clear pity for a woman whose entire existence had been reduced to desperate theater.

"Watch this," Marcus murmured, tapping the screen just as a black state trooper vehicle pulled up directly behind the courthouse steps.

Before Sylvia could deliver her closing remarks regarding legal action, the state attorney general himself stepped out of the vehicle, flanked by two federal prosecutors holding thick navy binders identical to the ones Marcus had brandished on the porch. The attorney general walked straight past the microphones, stepped up to the podium, and handed Sylvia an official federal subpoena for tax evasion, perjury, and witness tampering.

The flashbulbs exploded in a blinding frenzy as the cameras captured the exact moment color drained entirely from Sylvia’s face. The matriarch stared down at the federal seal, her mouth opening and closing silently like a fish out of water, utterly incapable of spinning this development into a sympathetic headline.
