Chapter 9: The Consultation

The office of Marcus Vance was located on the top floor of a sleek downtown high-rise overlooking the bustling city harbor. The room was bathed in natural light, smelling of aged leather and strong black coffee. Marcus, a sharp-dressed attorney in his late forties with keen grey eyes and a calm, reassuring demeanor, listened intently as Elena laid out the entire history—from the chaotic kitchen scene with the broken porcelain to the shocking discovery of Clara’s storage unit archive and the tragic backstory of Julian’s drowning in 1968.
When Elena finished, she leaned back in her chair, breathless and emotionally drained, waiting for the lawyer to pass judgment. Marcus simply nodded slowly, steepled his fingers, and took a sip of his coffee before speaking.
"Mrs. Vance—no relation, I presume?" Marcus offered a faint, polite smile to ease the tension. "First of all, let me commend you. What you have gathered here is a textbook case of intergenerational trauma manifesting as severe emotional and psychological abuse."
"She’s filing for visitation," Elena said, her voice tight. "She claims I’m an unstable, negligent mother."
"Of course she is," Marcus replied without missing a beat. "Control-driven personalities like your mother view any loss of dominance as an existential threat. Filing for visitation isn't about love for her grandchildren; it's about reclaiming territory and proving to herself that she still holds the reins."
He tapped a finger against the manila folder containing the police report and Sarah Jenkins' social work notes. "Fortunately, we have strong evidence on our side. The medical notes on Lily’s hands, the testimony of the social worker, the police report from the night of the incident, and even the psychological insights from her own journal create an overwhelming case against granting her any unsupervised access to your daughters. Furthermore, we can file a counter-petition for a permanent restraining order based on child endangerment."
Elena felt a massive weight lift off her shoulders. For days, the fear of losing her children in a protracted legal battle had gnawed at her soul. Hearing a seasoned professional validate her reality and outline a clear path forward brought a profound sense of relief.
"What do we need to do next?" Elena asked, her tone firming with renewed determination.

"We file the response immediately," Marcus said, pulling a digital tablet toward him. "We request a court-ordered psychological evaluation for your mother, citing her history of unresolved trauma and abusive behavior. If she refuses—which she likely will, given her paranoia—it strengthens our case exponentially. You just focus on being the rock your daughters need right now. Let me handle the courtroom."
As Elena left the attorney's office and walked back out into the bright afternoon sunlight, the city seemed less intimidating. The shadows cast by her past were finally being illuminated by truth, accountability, and the fierce, protective love she held for her two little girls.
