Chapter 10

The distant wail of a police siren cut through the crisp mountain air, echoing off the steep canyon walls and rolling toward the cabin like an approaching storm. Inside, the heavy atmosphere of deceit and hostility began to dissolve, replaced by the sobering reality of law enforcement intervention. Margaret remained slumped against the base of the dining table, her cream cable-knit sweater stained with spilled wine and dust, staring up at Helen with a mixture of hatred and absolute defeat.

Helen did not gloat. She simply turned away from the fallen woman, walking back toward the front entrance to ensure the door was unlocked for the arriving deputies. Her hands were remarkably steady as she straightened her collar and adjusted the belt of her trench coat. The internal turmoil that had consumed her since opening the front door hours ago had crystallized into a cold, unbreakable resolve. She was no longer just a mourning mother searching for answers; she was the architect of justice for her daughter.

The flashing red and blue lights of a county cruiser swept through the living room windows, painting the rustic wooden walls in surreal, shifting hues. Heavy footsteps crunched on the gravel driveway outside, followed by two sharp knocks on the front door. Helen turned the brass knob and pulled the heavy wooden door wide open, welcoming the cool night air and the tangible presence of the law.

Two county deputies stood on the porch, their uniforms crisp, utility belts heavy with gear, their faces grim and professional under the flashing overhead light of the cruiser. The lead officer, a weathered sergeant with sharp gray eyes, stepped across the threshold immediately assessing the scene.

“Evening, ma’am,” the sergeant said, his voice deep and reassuring. “We received an urgent call regarding trespassing, extortion, and potential foul play in connection with a missing persons case. Are you Mrs. Sinclair?”

“I am, Officer,” Helen replied evenly, stepping aside to let them enter. She gestured toward the kitchen where Margaret was slowly pushing herself up from the floor. “And the woman responsible for forging property deeds and extorting my late daughter is right over there.”

The deputies moved with practiced efficiency, bypassing Helen to secure the perimeter and approach Margaret. One of them immediately read Margaret her rights as she sputtered furious denials and threats of high-priced legal retaliation. Helen watched the proceedings with a detached, emotionless clarity. The nightmare was finally shifting from the shadows into the harsh, undeniable light of accountability.
