Chapter 9: Unraveling the Estate

As Martha moved purposefully toward the grand staircase to collect Eleanor’s belongings, the older woman realized her defeat was absolute. She could not fight the combined front of her son, his wife, and a household staff that was finally finding its voice. Eleanor smoothed the front of her purple dress with shaking hands, her dignity clinging to her like tattered velvet. She looked at Julian one last time, her expression hardening into a mask of bitter unforgiveness. “You will regret this, Julian. When she drains your accounts and leaves you with nothing, remember that I tried to save you,” Eleanor said, her voice dropping to a venomous whisper as she brushed past him toward the front door. Julian did not dignify the threat with a response. He simply watched her go, feeling a massive weight lift from his shoulders with every step she took away from them. The heavy mahogany door creaked open, letting in a cool blast of evening air that smelled of rain and freedom. Martha returned swiftly down the stairs, carrying a sleek leather valise that belonged to Eleanor, her movements efficient and devoid of her previous nervous hesitation. She walked past the older woman without a word, holding the door open. Eleanor cast one final, lingering glare at Clara and little Leo before stepping out onto the porch. The heavy door swung shut behind her with a definitive thud, cutting off the echoes of her reign once and for all. For a long moment, nobody in the foyer moved. The silence that followed was no longer oppressive; it was peaceful, breathing with the promise of a brand-new beginning. Clara let out a long, shuddering breath, her shoulders dropping several inches as the adrenaline finally began to drain from her system. Julian turned back to his wife, his expression softening into deep, aching tenderness. He stepped forward and pulled her into his arms, carefully mindful of her pregnancy, resting his chin on the top of her head.
