Chapter 1

The crystal chandeliers of L’Étoile shimmered above the white-clothed dining table, casting a cold, brilliant light over Julian Vance and Clara Sterling. Around them, murmurs of affluent diners faded into a heavy, suffocating quiet. Julian stood over the table, his chest heaving beneath his tailored black suit. His dark hair fell slightly across a forehead slick with furious sweat. With a sharp, aggressive motion, he had just slammed a towering stack of restaurant bills directly onto the pristine linen. The white paper sat there like a monolith of financial ruin, a monument to a betrayal that Julian was desperate to externalize.

Clara did not flinch. Seated gracefully in her striking red dress, her long red hair cascaded over her shoulders like molten copper. She possessed a stillness that seemed to mock his volatile energy.

Julian’s face twisted into an ugly, intense scowl. He leaned forward, bracing his weight on trembling knuckles, pointing a rigid finger directly into her face. His voice cracked with raw, explosive anger that cut through the upscale dining room.

“You’re paying this bill!” Julian shouted, spittle flying from his lips.

“Bill!” he repeated, his voice rising in hysterical disbelief.

Clara slowly lifted her right hand and placed it completely flat on top of the towering stack of paper. The gesture was deliberate, grounding, and infuriatingly calm. She did not raise her voice. She did not shrink away from his venomous glare. Instead, she turned her head slightly and locked her green eyes onto his with an unblinking, fearless gaze. She absorbed his screaming outburst as if it were nothing more than a gentle summer breeze rustling through leaves.

Julian’s face flushed a deeper crimson. He stared down at her, waiting for a breakdown, a scream, or a tear. None came.

Clara took a slow, measured breath. The corner of her mouth twitched upward, breaking into a subtle, confident, and deeply unsettling smile that sent a shiver straight down Julian’s spine. The tension in the room snapped, but instead of defusing, the air grew violently thick.

“You think these numbers scare me, Julian?” Clara finally spoke, her voice a low, silky hum that forced him to lean in closer just to hear her.

Julian stared at her smile, realizing with a jolt of pure terror that she wasn't trapped by his financial ambush at all—she had expected it.
