Chapter 5

Helena looked around the grand ballroom, watching in horror as the social elite—the very people whose validation she had craved her entire adult life—began to slip away into the corridors. The crystal chandeliers overhead seemed to dim, casting long, accusing shadows across the polished marble floor. Her immaculate updo felt like a crown of thorns, and the sparkling diamond necklace suddenly felt uncomfortably heavy against her collarbone.
“You’re letting her ruin us,” Helena whispered, her voice finally cracking with genuine vulnerability. She grabbed the lapel of Arthur’s black tuxedo, shaking him lightly. “We spent months planning this. My entire reputation is in this room. Tell me it’s not true.”
Arthur gently pried Helena’s fingers away from his jacket. His touch was not unkind, but it was final. He looked down at the cream-colored envelope still clutched in his trembling hand, recognizing the undeniable evidence of a life built on compromise and buried sins.
“It’s time to stop running, Helena,” Arthur said softly, his voice carrying the weary wisdom of a man who had finally run out of roads to escape down. He turned his attention back to the younger woman standing by the door. “Elena. You wanted to confront me. You wanted the truth brought into the light where it can’t be hidden behind foundation grants and legal settlements. We are listening now. What happens next?”
Elena uncrossed her arms, letting her hands rest naturally at her sides. She took a deliberate step forward, the bruises on her face catching the light of the chandelier. She did not look triumphant; she looked exhausted, yet resolute, carrying the grief of a lost mother and the burden of unyielding truth.

“Next, we go down to the precinct,” Elena said calmly. “Not quietly in the back of a private car, and not with a team of high-priced lawyers managing the narrative. We walk out those front doors together, under these lights, and you tell the authorities what happened the night my mother fell from your building.”
The band members standing on the elevated stage packed their instruments into black cases in absolute silence, the metallic clicks echoing through the vast, empty space. The grand wedding reception had transformed into an interrogation room, and there was no escape for the bride or the groom.
