Chapter 10: The Serving of the Writ

By mid-afternoon, the legal machinery set in motion by Sarah Jenkins had reached its target. Eleanor’s grand estate, situated in an exclusive gated neighborhood on the outskirts of the city, was quiet except for the low hum of the HVAC system and the rustle of festive greenery decorating the sweeping staircase. Eleanor sat at her mahogany desk, reviewing catering invoices for the upcoming Christmas Eve dinner, entirely confident in her absolute dominance over her world.
The sharp, authoritative chime of the front doorbell shattered her concentration. Eleanor frowned, annoyed that her housekeeper had not answered immediately, and rose from her chair with stately grace. She walked through the grand foyer and pulled open the heavy front door, expecting a delivery or perhaps a vendor seeking final instructions.
Instead, she found a tall man in a tailored dark suit standing on her porch, holding a thick manila envelope bearing the official seal of the probate court.
"Eleanor Sterling?" the man asked, his voice entirely devoid of deference.
"I am," Eleanor replied, her spine stiffening instantly. "Who are you, and what is the meaning of this intrusion?"
"I am a court-appointed process server," the man said smoothly, stepping forward and handing the envelope directly into her hands. "You have been officially served with an emergency injunction regarding the Sterling Family Trust. All accounts are frozen pending a forensic audit and court hearing scheduled for next week. Good afternoon, Mrs. Sterling."
Before Eleanor could process the words, the man turned and walked down the steps toward his unmarked sedan, leaving her standing on the threshold with the heavy envelope in her hands.
The color drained from Eleanor’s face, leaving her skin chalk-white against the rich maroon of her dress. For the first time in seventy years, the system she had manipulated, controlled, and weaponized had turned against her. Her hands trembled slightly as she pulled the papers from the envelope, her eyes scanning the legal terminology—*emergency injunction, fiduciary breach, forensic audit, temporary restraining order.*
"Unbelievable," she whispered, her voice cracking with sudden, incandescent fury.
She slammed the front door shut, the sound echoing through the empty halls of her fortress. She walked straight to her private study, picked up her landline phone, and dialed her long-standing attorney, Arthur Covington. It went straight to voicemail. She tried his mobile; it was turned off.

Realization struck her with the force of a physical blow. Arthur hadn't just gone missing yesterday; he had betrayed her. He was the only other person with the combination to the floor safe and the knowledge of the master file.
Eleanor stood in the center of her immaculate study, the papers clutched tightly in her fist. For decades, she had operated under the absolute conviction that order, discipline, and power were the only shields against a chaotic world. Now, the daughter she had raised with such rigorous control had breached her defenses, aided by the brother she had patronized for a lifetime.
