Chapter 8 - The Sealed Room

The bedroom door clicked shut with a sharp, final sound that reverberated through the quiet room, plunging us into an eerie, enclosed isolation. I dropped the typewritten note, vaulted across the carpet, and grabbed the doorknob, twisting it frantically. It wouldn't budge. The mechanism was jammed solid, locked from the outside by a force that felt immovable.
"Mark! Open the door!" Sarah screamed, rushing over and hammering her fists against the wood. "Open it right now!"
"I'm trying! It's stuck!" I shouted back, throwing my shoulder against the panels, but the heavy wood didn't even shudder.
Buster began to bark hysterically, scratching at the baseboards again as the unnatural cold from the hidden wall cavity began to spill out into the master suite, dropping the room's temperature by twenty degrees in a matter of seconds. Frost immediately began to spiderweb across the inside of our bedroom windows, turning the clear glass opaque with delicate, frozen crystals.
"The note," Sarah gasped, her breath pluming in the air as white clouds of condensation formed in the freezing room. "The note said the containment field fails by dawn if we don't play the tapes. Mark, look at the window!"
I turned away from the jammed door and stared at the glass. The frost wasn't just forming random patterns; it was taking shape, tracing letters and lines with terrifying precision. A phrase was freezing onto the glass from the outside in: LET US OUT.
"This is insane," I muttered, my boots crunching on the freezing floor as I hurried back to the steel lockbox. The reel-to-reel audio recorder sat inside, looking archaic and ominous in the dim light of the smartphone. "We have to play the tapes. Whatever is in those walls... it's connected to this machine."
"Don't touch it!" Sarah pleaded, backing away toward the corner of the room, hugging herself against the biting cold. "We don't know what it releases! It could be a gas, a pathogen, or—or something worse!"
"If we don't open the box and play the tape, we're going to freeze to death in this room in twenty minutes," I argued, pointing frantically at the frost racing across the walls. "Look at the thermometer by the bed—it's thirty-two degrees and dropping!"
I didn't wait for her permission. I reached into the lockbox, lifted the heavy reel-to-reel recorder out by its sturdy plastic handle, and set it down on the floor. The device was dusty, but when I flicked the power toggle, a small, amber vacuum tube inside the chassis glowed with a warm, steady light.
A magnetic tape was already spooled on the machine, labeled with a single handwritten tag: SESSION 01 - DR. ARLO VANCE - 1974.
With trembling fingers, I pressed the heavy plastic "PLAY" button down until it locked into place with a mechanical clack.
For a second, there was only a hiss of static. Then, a sharp, echoing voice filled the freezing bedroom, speaking with clinical precision.
