Chapter 1 - The Kitchen Threshold

The flashing red and blue lights of the cruiser cut jagged slices through the blinds, painting the kitchen walls in an erratic, urgent rhythm. Arthur stood frozen between the refrigerator and the center island, his fingers still aching from the grip he had just released on Clara’s arm. The muddy footprints smeared across the pristine white tiles looked like a battlefield casualty. Maya sat curled into a tight ball behind his legs, her pink dress stained with dark, wet soil, her small shoulders heaving with silent, exhausted breaths.
Clara stood near the threshold, rubbing her wrist where Arthur’s hand had clamped down. Her blonde hair, usually meticulously kept, was wild around her face, her jaw clenched so tight a muscle ticked violently near her temple.
"You have no idea what she did, Arthur," Clara hissed, her voice dropping into a dangerous, vibrating register. "You walk in here after twelve hours at the precinct and think you know everything?"
"I know what my eyes just saw," Arthur snapped back, his voice thick with a controlled, terrifying fury. He stepped forward, shielding Maya with his entire body. "You dragged a five-year-old across the floor like an animal. You crossed a line you can never uncross."
"She threw another tantrum!" Clara shouted, her voice cracking as she gestured wildly toward the dark hallway. "She dug holes in the basement wall with her bare hands! She’s not just acting out, Arthur. She’s destroying this house, and she’s losing her mind!"
"She is a child!" Arthur roared, pointing a trembling finger toward the open front door where Officer Miller was stepping out of the cruiser to investigate the noise. "And you are supposed to be her mother!"

"Get her away from me," Clara whispered, her eyes widening with a sudden, icy terror that had nothing to do with anger. She backed away toward the flashing lights outside. "You think I’m the monster here? Wait until you check what she buried under her bed."
