Chapter 13: Into the Whispering Ridge

The moon was completely obscured by thick, rolling storm clouds as Clara’s sedan crawled slowly up the unpaved logging road toward the base of Whispering Ridge. The headlights cut a harsh, piercing path through the towering, skeletal pine trees that crowded the narrow dirt track on either side, their branches swaying ominously in the rising night wind. In the back seat, Lily slept soundly, wrapped tightly in a heavy wool blanket, completely oblivious to the danger surrounding them, having been tucked safely into her car seat before they left the house. Evelyn had stayed behind, locking every door and window with trembling hands, promising to guard the home with her life while the others ventured into the dark. Mark killed the engine a hundred yards before the end of the access road, letting the car coast silently to a halt behind a dense thicket of blackberry bushes to keep their approach hidden. The silence inside the vehicle was absolute, broken only by the ticking of the cooling engine and the steady, rhythmic patter of light rain beginning to hit the windshield. Mark reached into the glove compartment, pulling out a heavy-duty tactical flashlight and checking the charge before handing it to Clara. He then retrieved a sturdy hunting knife from beneath the passenger seat, slipping it securely onto his belt with a quiet, practiced motion. "We walk the rest of the way," Mark whispered, turning back to look at Clara in the dim amber glow of the dashboard clock. "The entrance to the old ventilation shaft is about half a mile up the ravine, hidden behind the abandoned logging shed." Clara nodded, taking a deep, steadying breath of the cold air that leaked through the window seals, letting the adrenaline clear her head of any remaining fear. She opened her car door, stepping out onto the damp, needle-strewn earth, the chill hitting her instantly through her mauve sweater. Mark stepped out beside her, his breath pluming in the dark as he grabbed a heavy canvas duffel bag containing climbing ropes, spare batteries, and emergency flares. Together, they crept silently around to the back of the car, lifting Lily out of her seat with extreme care so as not to wake her. Clara held the sleeping child tightly against her chest, wrapping the wool blanket securely around her small body to shield her from the biting wind and the misty drizzle. Arthur stayed in the driver's seat, holding the encrypted radio channel open to maintain contact, his old eyes shining with unshed tears as he watched them disappear into the pitch-black wall of the forest. The trees closed in around Clara and Mark like the bars of a cage as they began the steep, treacherous climb up the ravine, guided only by the faint, probing beam of the tactical flashlight cutting through the wet mountain mist.
