Chapter 13 - The Threshold of Final Justice

The heavy oak doors of the federal courthouse swung wide, cutting off whatever smug legal ultimatum Julian was about to deliver. District Attorney Arthur Vance stepped onto the stone landing, his tailored grey coat sweeping in the brisk pre-dawn wind. He looked down the steps, his gaze taking in the tense standoff between Agent Miller’s team and the corporate defense lawyer.

"Mr. Vance," Julian said smoothly, instantly shifting his demeanor from aggressive blockade to oily charm as he pivoted toward the District Attorney. "I am glad you're here. My clients have secured an emergency appellate stay regarding these proceedings. Any materials brought by these individuals are inadmissible fruit of an unlawful search."

District Attorney Vance didn't even break his stride as he descended the stone steps toward them. He looked past Julian entirely, his eyes locking onto Agent Miller, who held the secure evidence case containing the recovered server drives and handwritten ledgers.

"Good morning, Agent Miller," the District Attorney said, ignoring Julian completely. "Did you secure the physical data before the remote wipe?"

"Ninety-two percent recovered, sir," Agent Miller replied, stepping up the landing and handing the secure case directly to the D.A. "Including offshore financial transfers, falsified wardship deeds, and the complete record of municipal bribery spanning fifteen years."

Julian’s smooth exterior finally fractured. He stepped forward, raising his voice with sudden panic. "Mr. Vance! You cannot accept unverified documents seized without proper judicial warrant! I demand you uphold the state appellate stay immediately!"

District Attorney Vance stopped, turning his head slowly to fix Julian with a look of absolute, glacial contempt.

"Julian," the D.A. said, his voice ringing clearly across the empty plaza. "An emergency stay signed by a judge who is personally listed as a beneficiary on page four of this bribery ledger is not worth the paper it’s printed on."

Julian’s face drained of color, his mouth opening slightly as the implications hit him with crushing force. "That... that's impossible. The server logs were encrypted—"

"Everything is encrypted until someone decides to shine a light on it," Clara interrupted, stepping forward up the stone steps. Her dark hair was sleek in its bun, her royal blue satin shirt immaculate, and her posture radiating unbreakable strength as she held sleeping Maisie close to her chest.

Julian glared at Clara, desperation bleeding into his tone. "You don't understand the scope of the Harrison Trust, Mrs. Harrison. You are destroying your own family's foundation. Without Martha's management, you have nothing—no assets, no home, no future."

"We don't want her foundation," Mark said, stepping up beside his wife. He placed his bandaged hand gently on Clara’s shoulder, standing taller than he ever had in his entire life. "We want our lives back. And we want justice."

District Attorney Vance nodded firmly, turning to the two federal marshals standing behind him. "Take Mr. Vance's portfolio and escort him off federal property. Any further interference with this investigation will result in his immediate arrest as an unindicted co-conspirator."

The marshals stepped forward instantly, flanking Julian on both sides and relieving him of his leather portfolio before he could utter another protest. As they guided him firmly down the steps toward his idling SUV, Julian threw one last look of pure venom toward Clara and Mark, knowing his golden era of untouchable corporate defense had officially come to an end.

District Attorney Vance gestured toward the open courthouse doors. "Agent Miller, bring the evidence inside. Mr. and Mrs. Harrison, please accompany me to my chambers. We have a warrant for Martha Harrison's federal indictment to sign, and I believe you will want to be present when it's executed."

As they crossed the threshold into the warm, brightly lit marble interior of the federal building, Clara felt the suffocating weight of the past decade finally lift from her shoulders. The nightmare was over, and the dawn of a new, unclouded reality was finally breaking.

However, just as the heavy oak doors clicked shut behind them, Agent Miller’s secure satellite phone rang once more, bringing a final, unexpected piece of news from the municipal holding facility downtown.
