Chapter 13

The blinding flashlights from the top of the maintenance ladder pinned the four fugitives against the damp concrete wall of the subway tunnel. The deep, rhythmic rumble of the oncoming midnight freight train grew louder by the second, vibrating through the soles of their shoes and filling the enclosed space with a deafening roar.

"Don't move another step!" Jonathan shouted down from the ladder, his face twisted in absolute rage. "Arthur, you pathetic old fool, hand over that ledger right now or you'll all wish you stayed in the slums."

Arthur gripped the thick leather ledger inside his canvas jacket, stepping in front of Maeve and Clara to shield them.

"It's over, Jonathan!" Arthur shouted back over the roar of the approaching train. "The whole city is going to see what you did to your own granddaughter!"

Jonathan sneered, descending the top three rungs of the ladder with chilling composure.

"The city sees what I want them to see," Jonathan replied coldly, pulling a sleek silver phone from his coat pocket. "And right now, my security team is broadcasting a very different story to the morning news—that a mentally unstable homeless girl and a disgraced former orderly kidnapped my granddaughter and granddaughter-in-law."

Clara gasped, horror washing over her face.

"He's framing us," Clara whispered, turning to her mother in sheer panic. "Mom, what do we do?"

Eleanor stepped forward, her face hardening with a strength and defiance that stunned even Jonathan. She looked up at the man who had terrorized her family for over a decade, her voice ringing out clear and steady above the rising roar of the train.

"You can lie to the papers, Father," Eleanor shouted fearlessly. "You can buy every judge in this state. But you cannot buy the truth when it’s standing right in front of you."

Jonathan’s eyes darted to Maeve, who stepped out from behind Arthur’s shadow. The young homeless girl looked up at the powerful billionaire with large, fearless, emotional eyes, lifting the silver locket high into the beam of the flashlight so the crest gleamed brilliantly in the dark.

"I survived your fire," Maeve said, her voice cutting through the air with absolute clarity. "And I'm not running anymore."

Jonathan’s face drained of color for a fraction of a second, a sudden crack appearing in his icy facade. He lunged down the ladder, motioning frantically to his guards.

"Get them! Take the ledger!" Jonathan screamed.

The four guards began descending the ladder in a rush, their heavy boots clanging loudly against the iron rungs.
