Chapter 15: The Unbroken Vow

The heavy armored transport rolled smoothly through the security gates of the subterranean facility into the bright, crisp morning air of a new day. In the backseat, Toby looked out the window at the rolling green hills stretching out toward the horizon, his breathing deep, even, and entirely unassisted by oxygen tanks or monitors for the first time in his young life.
Marcus sat beside him in the passenger seat, his service dress uniform neatly pressed once more, the dark chapter of his military career officially closed with an honorable retirement filing submitted electronically to command headquarters just an hour prior. He had traded his tactical sidearm for a civilian future, choosing to walk away from the shadowed world of black-budget operations and covert directives to focus entirely on raising his son.
Clara sat on the opposite side of the spacious SUV, dressed in fresh civilian clothes rather than blood-stained blue scrubs. The physical bruises on her face were healing, fading into a pale yellow, but the inner strength she had discovered within herself during the darkest hours of the hospital siege remained completely untouched. She had decided to accept a position at a quiet family practice clinic three hours north, far away from the sprawling urban medical complexes and the dangerous corporate secrets that lurked within them.
As the vehicle merged onto the interstate heading north toward open country, Agent Miller’s voice crackled once through the encrypted secure comms unit installed in the dash, offering a final, respectful farewell. “Safe travels, Colonel. You did good out there.”
Marcus didn't bother responding. He simply reached out and switched the communication device off, letting the static fade into absolute silence.
He turned his head to look back at Clara, who caught his eye and offered a quiet, genuine smile. Then he looked down at his son, who had fallen back asleep against the plush leather seat, his chest rising and falling in a steady, perfect rhythm of life restored.

Marcus placed his hand firmly over Toby’s shoulder, a silent renewal of the vow he had made in the dim, chaotic light of Room Fourteen when all hope seemed lost.
Nobody gets near my son. Ever again.
