Chapter 1

The warm glow of festive hanging lanterns flickered softly against the fading twilight of the suburban backyard. Clara stood at the edge of the patio, her fingers tightening around the strap of her leather purse as the final notes of the birthday song drifted away into the evening air. Her nine-year-old daughter, Maya, was still catching her breath from blowing out the candles, her face flushed with innocent joy. But Clara’s attention was entirely consumed by the small, neatly wrapped gift box resting right beside the frosted cake. It was the package meant for Maya from Grandma, adorned with a bright blue silk ribbon that caught the amber light of the patio bulbs.

Clara’s heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic, suffocating rhythm that felt entirely out of place in the gentle, celebratory atmosphere. Beside her, Elena, a family friend wearing a patterned blouse and black trousers, reached down casually toward the table, her fingers brushing the edge of the wrapping paper. Elena had arrived only minutes before, carrying a heavy load of domestic errands and hurried apologies, her mind clearly fixed on departures rather than celebrations. Without pausing to think, Clara stepped forward, her body moving on instinct, and placed a firm, trembling hand over the box to halt Elena’s movement.

The air between the two women grew instantly tight, heavy with an unspoken desperation that threatened to shatter the fragile illusion of a happy family gathering. Elena blinked in surprise, her hand freezing inches from the shiny blue ribbon. Clara swallowed hard, trying to force moisture into her dry throat as she searched for a plausible explanation. The excuse spilled out of her mouth before she could filter the sudden, sharp panic gripping her chest. She needed a reason, any reason, to salvage the moment without revealing the rot eating away at her family's foundation.

"That one’s from Grandma, please put it back by Maya," Clara said, her voice dropping to a harsh, strained whisper that barely carried over the low murmur of the other guests chatting near the hedge.

Elena raised an eyebrow, clearly confused by the sudden intensity radiating from the usually composed mother. But Clara could not afford hesitation or politeness. The hidden truth of their domestic reality pressed down on her with unbearable weight, turning a simple backyard birthday party into a battlefield of survival and hidden debts. Maya looked up from the cake, her bright eyes filled with a sudden, aching premonition of loss.
