Chapter 2

Mark remained frozen in his crouched position on the hardwood floor, his hand still resting lightly against Clara’s trembling chest. The dust motes dancing in the afternoon sun suddenly seemed like tiny, mocking witnesses to a fractured domestic reality. He slowly pulled his hand back, standing up with a stiffness in his knees that had nothing to do with age and everything to do with the heavy shock settling into his muscles. Clara stayed close to his leg, her small fingers wrapping securely into the fabric of his dark trousers, using him as a physical shield against the woman standing in the hallway.

Mark turned his body fully toward the background doorway, his eyes locking onto Elena. She had not moved an inch. The green dress she wore seemed to absorb the light rather than reflect it, casting a strange shadow over her posture.

"Elena," Mark said, his voice dropping an octave, losing its previous gentleness and taking on a sharp, controlled edge. "What did Clara mean by that?"

Elena tilted her head slightly, a micro-expression of annoyance flickering across her face before she smoothed her features back into absolute neutrality. She took a slow step forward into the living room, her footsteps making a soft, rhythmic click against the floorboards.

"You are overreactting, Mark," Elena said calmly, her voice even and devoid of any defensive tremor. "The child had a fall in the garden. She tripped over the landscape edging near the hydrangeas. Her imagination always runs wild when she gets hurt, and she tends to assign blame where none belongs."

Mark looked down at Clara. The young girl shook her head vigorously, her long blonde hair whipping across her red, tear-stained face. Clara clutched her stuffed rabbit toy to her chest like a talisman, her lower lip trembling.

"I didn't trip," Clara whispered fiercely, her voice barely audible but carrying a desperate conviction that pierced straight through Elena’s rehearsed explanation. "You pushed me. Because I dropped the glass."

The silence that followed was suffocating. Mark looked back up at his wife. The stark contrast between Clara’s raw, trembling honesty and Elena’s cool, unblinking composure created an unbearable tension in the room. Mark realized in that instant that the woman he had shared a life, a home, and a bed with for nearly a decade was a stranger capable of calculated cruelty. He did not yell, nor did he slam his fists against the wall. Instead, a cold, focused determination took root inside him. He had to protect his daughter, and to do that, he needed to uncover whatever else Elena had been hiding behind her polite, smiling facade.
