Chapter 1

The opulent silence of the Grand Continental Hotel’s private east wing was shattered not by a scream, but by the sharp, trembling intake of breath from Clara Vance. Dressed in her sleeveless brown V-neck dress, her elegant updo remaining rigidly intact despite the sudden spike of adrenaline, she pointed a manicured finger directly at the chest of the young girl standing by the service alcove. Clara’s husband, Julian, stood a half-step behind her, his dark hair falling slightly across his forehead, his green jacket zipped halfway over a charcoal black shirt. He stared at the scene with a look of profound, paralyzed disbelief.
Clara’s voice did not boom; instead, it cut through the corridor with a glacial, controlled fury. “You stole my necklace,” she said, her eyes narrowing as she glared at the maid.
The maid, a twenty-five-year-old woman named Maeve whose blue uniform and white apron were crisp and spotless, shrank back against the floral wallpaper. She clutched a small brown leather handbag against her stomach like a shield. Maeve’s lips parted, but no sound emerged immediately. Her chest rose and fell in shallow, panicked rhythms. She had worked at the hotel for three years, scrubbing marble floors and changing heavy linens without a single complaint on her record.
“I didn't touch it, Mrs. Vance,” Maeve finally whispered, her voice cracking with a raw, defensive terror. “I swear to you, I didn't go near your jewelry box.”
Julian stepped forward, his boots clicking softly against the deep-pile carpet. His expression was a mix of protective anger and deep-seated reluctance. He reached out, his hand gripping the edge of the leather handbag Maeve was holding so desperately. With a gentle yet firm pull, Julian opened the brass clasp. The leather flap fell forward, exposing the dark fabric lining of the interior pouch.
Inside, catching the dim afternoon light filtering through the high arched windows, rested the unmistakable silhouette of Clara’s heirloom diamond necklace. The stones caught the light, refracting tiny pinpricks of fire against the drab hotel fabric. Julian pulled his hand back as if he had touched a hot iron, his eyes widening in stunned betrayal.
Clara let out a bitter, humorless laugh, her arms crossing tightly over her chest. “And you expect us to believe that magically appeared in your bag?” she demanded.

Before Maeve could formulate a defense, Julian strode toward the wall-mounted security panel at the end of the hall. He tapped the interface, pulling up the looped feed from the corridor camera directly overhead. On the small black-and-white screen, the grainy footage clearly showed a hand sliding the diamond necklace deep into the open pocket of Maeve’s exact handbag.
Julian turned back, his gaze fixed on Maeve with absolute shock. “The camera shows you putting it there,” he said, his voice flat and heavy with finality.
