Chapter 10: The Deposition

The conference room on the tenth floor of the federal courthouse downtown was austere, windowless, and smelled faintly of floor wax. Elena sat at the witness table, dressed in a sharp navy blazer and white linen trousers, her posture immaculate. Across the room sat Julian, flanked by a public defender whose exhaustion was written clearly across his face.
Julian looked ten years older than he had at the airport terminal just weeks ago. His suit was wrinkled, his hair unstyled, and the arrogant confidence that had once defined his stride was entirely gone. He avoided looking directly at Elena, keeping his eyes fixed on the wooden tabletop where a copy of his federal indictment lay open.
Marcus sat beside Elena as her legal counsel, leaning over to whisper a final instruction before the magistrate entered the room.
"Keep your answers concise, direct, and factual," Marcus murmured quietly. "We aren't here to argue emotion; we are here to place the legal record beyond dispute."
The heavy oak side door swung open, and the federal magistrate stepped into the room, signaling everyone to stand. Once seated, the magistrate adjusted his glasses and looked down at the stacked documentation before him.
"We are here for the preliminary deposition in the matter of Federal versus Julian Vance, Case File 489-B," the magistrate announced, his voice echoing off the acoustic panels. "The charges include wire fraud, interstate financial embezzlement, and the fraudulent forgery of testamentary power-of-attorney documents. Counselor, you may proceed with the plaintiff's statement."
Elena stood up smoothly, walking to the small podium facing the magistrate’s bench. She didn't look at Julian; her gaze remained fixed forward, steady and absolute.
"For five years, I believed I was a partner in a shared life built on mutual trust and transparency," Elena began, her voice carrying clearly across the quiet room without a single tremor of hesitation. "I entrusted my family’s legacy, my professional reputation, and my personal safety to a man who systematically utilized those exact resources to fund a fraudulent enterprise behind my back."
She reached into her leather folder and pulled out a single, certified document—the forged power-of-attorney form Julian had used to access her grandfather’s trust while she was caring for her dying mother in hospice.
"This document represents more than a financial crime," Elena continued, holding the paper up slightly before placing it flat on the podium. "It represents a deliberate exploitation of vulnerability. Julian Vance did not simply steal funds; he manufactured an alternate reality designed to strip away my independence while pretending to stand beside me."
Julian flinched slightly at the words, his hands clenching into fists beneath the table. The public defender leaned over, whispering a cautionary warning into his ear, but Julian remained silent, staring at the polished wood with a look of profound defeat.
"The state’s forensic audit confirms every dollar diverted, every fraudulent signature executed, and every shell company established," Elena concluded, her tone unwavering. "We are asking the court for full restitution of all assets, permanent forfeiture of corporate equity, and the maximum custodial sentence applicable under federal law."
