Chapter 10: The Struggle in the Warehouse

The impact sent a shockwave through the rotting plywood walls, the entire makeshift structure groaning in protest as Marcus and Julian tumbled onto the littered concrete floor. The battered brown leather briefcase flew open, scattering white folders and loose documents across the dusty ground like autumn leaves caught in a windstorm. Maya scrambled backward, her flashlight rolling across the floor and casting erratic, spinning beams of light against the towering stacks of wooden pallets outside the office. Julian grunted as Marcus pinned him to the ground, his hands grabbing desperately for Marcus’s collar, their past friendship and years of bitter resentment culminating in this violent, desperate clash. Julian was older now, but desperation made him vicious, and he managed to flip Marcus over with a sudden, brutal twist of his body, slamming his forearm across Marcus’s throat to cut off his air supply. Marcus gasped, his hands clawing at Julian’s jacket as his vision began to blur around the edges, the cold concrete pressing hard against his spine. Maya didn't hesitate; she grabbed a heavy metal energy drink can off the folding table and brought it down with full force against Julian’s shoulder, the sharp impact breaking his grip and sending him stumbling sideways with a sharp cry of pain. Marcus rolled away, coughing violently as he sucked air back into his burning lungs, scrambling to his feet just as Julian lunged toward Maya with a look of pure malice. Intercepting him mid-stride, Marcus tackled Julian again, driving them both backward into a stack of empty wooden pallets that collapsed with a deafening crash of splintering wood. The noise echoed through the cavernous warehouse like rolling thunder, shaking dust and debris down from the rotting rafters far above. Julian lay tangled in the broken wood, winded and bleeding from a scrape along his jawline, his breathing coming in ragged, shallow gasps. Marcus stood over him, his chest heaving, his fists clenched as he looked down at the man who had tormented their lives for fifteen years. Maya quickly moved around the wreckage, gathering the scattered documents into a frantic pile while keeping her eyes locked on Julian to ensure he didn't pull a hidden weapon. Julian spat a drop of blood onto the concrete, offering a weak, defiant grin even as he struggled to push the heavy wooden slats off his legs. "You can beat me up all you want, Marcus," Julian rasped, his voice strained but steady. "The timer is still running. When the sun comes up, your whole world burns anyway."
