Chapter 1 - The First Breath

The flickering flame of the beeswax candle illuminated the heavy mahogany wainscoting of the ancestral parlor, casting long, jittery shadows across the ornate gold frame. Julian stood frozen, his broad shoulders squared inside the tailored dark blue wool of his Italian suit, his tattooed knuckles pressed hard against the canvas of the woman in the portrait. His heavy signet ring caught the amber light, scraping softly against the dried oil layers as he forced the heavy painting to swing outward on its concealed iron hinges. The rusted mechanism groaned, a dry, protesting sound that seemed to echo from deep within the damp foundations of the sprawling, isolated estate. Behind him, Eleanor gripped the edge of the polished marble console table, her knuckles white against the dark stone, her pearl earrings catching the erratic candlelight with every shudder of her breath. She swallowed hard, her elderly eyes wide and clouded with decades of accumulated dread.
“You shouldn’t have forced it, Julian,” Eleanor whispered, her voice trembling like dry autumn leaves scraping across a paved walkway. “Some stones are meant to stay buried in the dark. You are unearthing things that refused to die with her.”
Julian didn't turn around. His dark eyes remained locked on the cavernous void revealed behind the wall, where a single naked bulb cast a sickly, jaundiced glow over concrete walls weeping with moisture.
“Quiet, Mother,” Julian retorted, his voice low, sharp, and laced with suppressed fury that made the air in the room feel instantly heavier. “My daughter just told us someone was breathing back there. Do you seriously expect me to stand here and pretend I didn't hear it too?”
“It is just an old draft!” Eleanor snapped back, her posture stiffening as she stepped forward, her dark blue dress rustling sharply in the silent room. “The masonry in this wing has always settled unevenly. You are chasing ghosts, Julian, just like your father did before you destroyed this family!”
“Don't you dare bring him into this!” Julian spun around, his jaw clenched so tight a muscle ticked violently beneath his tattoos. “My father didn't destroy this family; he hid the wreckage right behind this wall, and you helped him keep the hammer swinging!”
“Stop fighting!” little Clara cried out, her small hands clutching the soft fabric of her light beige cardigan as tears finally spilled over her flushed cheeks. “You’re both scaring me! She’s looking right at us!”
Julian and Eleanor both stopped, their breath catching in their throats as they turned their eyes back toward the dark recess of the hidden room. Sitting alone in the shadows on a wooden chair was a woman in a black dress, her face turned toward them, her eyes wide, hollow, and utterly silent.

And then, the woman in the shadows slowly raised a pale, trembling hand and pointed a single finger directly at Eleanor.
