Chapter 1

The heavy wooden front door swung inward on well-oiled hinges, revealing Arthur standing in the dim light of the porch. His dark wool coat was buttoned tight against the biting autumn chill, the fabric smelling faintly of damp asphalt and stale tobacco. He peered into the entryway, his brow furrowing as his eyes adjusted to the warm, suffocating gloom of the suburban living room.
"Rebecca, who did this to you?" Arthur asked, his voice dropping an octave as the reality of the scene took shape before him.
Rebecca stood near the edge of the hallway, clutching little Leo tightly against her chest. The infant's cries had settled into a ragged, exhausted hiccuping. A thin, dark trail of dried blood still clung to the corner of her lower lip, catching the hallway light like a jagged scar against her pale skin. Her blue dress, usually crisp and neat, was rumpled and stained with formula and dust. Behind her, Julian loomed like a storm cloud, his tall frame tense under a thick grey sweater layered over a stark white button-down shirt. His jaw was locked so tight the muscle twitched beneath his closely shaven cheek.
Arthur took a step forward, his polished leather shoe clicking sharply against the hardwood floor. His gaze darted downward, momentarily catching on a sleek black smartphone lying face down near the base of the living room sofa. The screen was dark, cracked across the glass like a spiderweb.
"Julian, what is happening here?" Arthur demanded, stepping fully inside and letting the door click shut behind him. The sound felt final, sealing the three adults inside a pressure cooker of unspoken history and simmering violence.
Julian didn't blink. His dark eyes remained fixed on Rebecca, a warning written in the rigid set of his broad shoulders. "It's nothing, Arthur. A domestic dispute. A momentary lapse in judgment. Rebecca tripped over the rug while trying to calm the baby. Isn't that right, Rebecca?"
Rebecca looked from her father’s weathered, concerned face back to the man who had controlled her life for the past five years. Every instinct screamed at her to protect the infant in her arms, to shield her child from the toxic environment that had finally boiled over tonight. She inhaled deeply, tasting the metallic tang of blood in her mouth.

"No," Rebecca whispered, her voice steady despite the tremor in her hands. "He's lying to you, Dad. He's lying about everything."
Arthur’s posture stiffened. He ignored Julian entirely, crossing the remaining feet of the room to place a trembling, calloused hand on his daughter's arm. "Tell me everything, Rebecca. I am right here."
