Chapter 1

The cold water of the swimming pool surged into Martha’s lungs, burning her chest with a sharp, unforgiving agony. Her silver hair, usually tied back with neat precision, fanned out across the dark surface like a crown of seaweed. She thrashed instinctively, her frail limbs fighting a current born of sudden betrayal. Just moments ago, she had been sitting in her metal wheelchair, staring up at the cold, beautiful face of Victoria, a woman she had foolishly trusted within the sanctuary of her own home.

From the concrete coping above, Victoria watched with a chilling detachment. The deep red gown she wore shimmered under the moonlight, the high slit exposing a glimpse of black high heels that seemed entirely out of place beside a drowning victim. Victoria did not flinch, nor did she offer a hand. Instead, her cold blue eyes narrowed as Martha’s wet fingers scraped frantically against the tiles, searching for purchase that simply wasn’t there.

“You should have stayed out of my house!” Martha gasped, her voice cracking under the weight of water and exhaustion.

Victoria remained silent, her expression hardened into an absolute mask of malice. She had waited years for this moment, orchestrating the quiet takeover of the estate with calculated precision. Martha’s wheelchair stood empty beside the pool, its metal frame catching the harsh glare of the overhead security lights. The cane Martha occasionally relied upon rested idly against a pair of stone pillars near the patio entrance, a useless symbol of independence now out of reach.

Suddenly, a heavy footstep crunched on the gravel path. A tall figure in a dark trench coat burst into the illuminated pool area. It was Julian, his face etched with absolute fury and protective panic. Without a moment of hesitation, Julian shoved past Victoria, his dark eyes locked entirely on the drowning woman. He dropped recklessly to his knees at the slick edge of the pool, ignoring the spray of chlorinated water that soaked his clothes.

“Get away from my mother!” Julian shouted, his voice echoing off the brick walls of the grand mansion. He reached down with powerful, steady hands, grabbing Martha firmly by the forearms. His muscles strained as he hauled her heavy, waterlogged frame upward, dragging her out of the chilling depths and onto the safety of the concrete.

Martha collapsed against his chest, coughing violently, her breathing ragged and shallow. Julian glared up at Victoria, the intense emotional tension between them crackling in the cool night air like a live wire. Victoria merely adjusted the strap of her gown, her expression unreadable as she took a slow step backward into the shadows.
