Chapter 1

Officer Evelyn Vance adjusted the weight of her duty belt as she knelt on the rough, sun-baked shoulder of Interstate 95. The desert wind carried the faint scent of heated asphalt and distant sagebrush, a harsh soundtrack to an even harsher reality. Before her sat a young woman with tear-streaked blonde hair, huddled in oversized grey sweatpants and a worn beige cardigan. Tucked tightly against the woman’s trembling chest was a fragile bundle wrapped in a soft pink blanket. A few yards away, a gleaming black SUV idled quietly, casting a long shadow over the tarmac. Beside it stood a man in an impeccably tailored blue suit, his hand pressed over his mouth in sheer disbelief, and a woman in an emerald green sequined evening gown who stared blankly at the scene unfolding on the ground.

Evelyn kept her voice steady, stripping away any official coldness to reach through the panic. “What happened here?” she asked, her eyes moving carefully from the mother to the baby, then back up to the road.

The young woman looked up, her blue eyes wide, glassy, and swimming with uncontainable terror. She pulled the pink blanket even tighter, as if bracing for a physical blow. “He left me on the road! He tried to leave us!” she cried out, her voice cracking under the weight of the betrayal.

Evelyn absorbed the words without flinching, her mind calculating the logistics of the highway, the distance from the nearest exit, and the strange juxtaposition of high-end evening wear and desperate roadside abandonment. She looked past the weeping mother down at the bundle. Nestled securely inside the folds of the pink blanket, completely unaware of the chaos surrounding it, the infant slept peacefully. Its tiny chest rose and fell in a steady, rhythmic cadence, entirely untouched by the malice of the adult world.

Evelyn rose slightly, her posture shifting from empathetic listener to investigator. She turned her gaze back toward the black SUV, locking eyes with the man in the blue suit. The man lowered his hand slowly from his mouth, his chest heaving as he stared down the asphalt at the officer and the abandoned mother. Next to him, the woman in the green dress gasped, her hands flying to her chest as if she had just witnessed a physical collision.

“Tell me everything,” the man in the blue suit shouted across the gap, his voice tight with defensive panic.

Evelyn ignored him for a crucial second longer. She leaned in closer to the young mother, her expression hardening into absolute seriousness as she examined the delicate infant’s features. She needed to establish the baseline of truth before the wealthy strangers in designer clothes could spin a narrative.

“This baby is his?” Evelyn asked softly, her gaze piercing through the young woman’s tears.
