Chapter 10

The grand dining room was a blinding display of wealth and opulence. Crystal chandeliers cast a brilliant, warm light over the long mahogany table laden with silver platters, fine china, and cascading arrangements of white orchids. Half a dozen prominent guests—local politicians, wealthy investors, and social elites—sat chatting animatedly, their laughter echoing off the high vaulted ceilings. At the head of the table sat Eleanor, radiant in her rich green dress, her diamond necklace sparkling brilliantly as she regaled the table with a charming anecdote.
When Julian appeared in the doorway, the conversation faltered slightly. Eleanor’s eyes snapped toward him, her smile remaining fixed on her face, though her eyes hardened into dangerous flints of glass. She had clearly told the guests that Julian was suffering from a sudden migraine, and his unexpected appearance disrupted the carefully choreographed narrative she had prepared.
"Ah, darling!" Eleanor called out, her voice dripping with sweet, performative affection as she gestured to the empty seat beside her at the head of the table. "You’re feeling better? We were just discussing the upcoming charity gala. We missed you terribly during the first course."
Julian walked slowly into the room, his stride calm and measured. Every eye at the table turned to him, sensing the sudden shift in atmosphere. He did not smile. He pulled out his chair and sat down slowly, resting his hands flat on the polished tablecloth.
"Thank you, Eleanor," Julian said, his voice cutting clearly through the ambient noise of the room. "I am feeling remarkably clear-headed. In fact, I have never seen things quite as clearly as I do right now."
A polite, confused chuckle rippled through the guests, but Eleanor’s smile tightened into a rigid line. She knew that tone. She leaned in close, speaking beneath the cover of general conversation. "What have you done, Julian?" she hissed softly, her manicured nails digging into the fabric of her napkin. "Where is the girl?"

"She is safe, Eleanor," Julian replied evenly, pouring himself a glass of red wine from the crystal decanter. "And she carries something very interesting. Something about a girl named Eleanor Vance who worked in the stables twenty-one years ago and decided she deserved more than a maid’s uniform."
Color vanished from Eleanor’s face entirely. For a horrifying second, her aristocratic facade completely fractured, revealing the desperate, ruthless survivor underneath. But she recovered with terrifying speed, her voice dropping to a venomous whisper. "You are destroying everything we built. Every asset, every connection, every bit of social standing you hold. If I go down, Julian, I will make sure I drag your entire family name into the ash heap with me."
