Chapter 6

The words hung in the quiet bedroom air like a physical weight, pressing down on Clara’s chest. For a moment, the hum of the bedside clock was the only sound in the room. Clara stared at the older woman, processing the grim reality behind David’s erratic behavior and abrupt decision.

“Break-ins?” Clara repeated, her voice barely above a whisper. “Eleanor, why didn’t David call the police? Why didn't he tell me?”

“Because the police can’t protect you from a ghost,” Eleanor said, her tone grimly matter-of-fact. She closed the locket with a soft click and slipped the chain around her neck, securing the clasp with practiced ease. “My late husband, David’s father, was a man of many business ventures. Not all of them were signed in clean ink. There were partnerships that turned sour, debts that were never collected, and promises that were broken in the name of corporate survival. I thought those men were all gone. I thought time had buried their grudges.”

“And you think someone is coming after you—after David?” Clara asked, a cold shudder running down her spine. The suburban tranquility of their neighborhood suddenly felt like a fragile illusion, easily shattered by old sins.

“I know someone is,” Eleanor corrected gently. “A man named Marcus Vance. You don’t know that name, but David does. Marcus spent ten years in federal prison for financial fraud—fraud that ruined his family and cost him everything. He served his time, and now he’s out. And he believes my husband stole the patent that built our family’s fortune.”

Clara rubbed her forehead, a dull headache throbbing behind her eyes. “This is insane. If it’s a legal dispute over a patent from decades ago, why target an elderly woman in her apartment? Why threaten you now?”

“Because Vance doesn’t want money, Clara. He wants retribution,” Eleanor said, her voice steady, devoid of self-pity or fear. “He wants David to feel the exact same helplessness he felt when his life was dismantled. And David, being the dutiful son he is, panicked. He brought me here to keep me safe, believing our home was a fortress.”

“A fortress,” Clara muttered bitterly, looking around the modest guest room. “With glass windows and unlocked doors.”

“David loves you,” Eleanor added, softening her tone. “He brought me here in secret because he didn’t want to drag you into a nightmare that isn’t yours. But secrets have a way of rotting from the inside out. Now you know. The question is, Clara, what are you going to do with that knowledge?”
