Chapter 6

By mid-morning, the inevitable summons arrived. A crisp, heavy envelope slid under the guesthouse door, bearing Eleanor’s unmistakable embossed monogram. Julian picked it up, broke the seal without hesitation, and scanned the brief, typed note inside. Eleanor was demanding his presence in her private study within the hour, explicitly stating that Clara and the baby were not welcome. Julian looked up at Clara, who was folding a pile of infant clothes into a small suitcase they had packed earlier. "She wants to talk," Julian said, his voice level. "Alone." Clara stopped folding and walked over to him, placing a hand on his chest. "Go. But remember who you are now, Julian. You're not the boy who needs her permission to exist." Julian nodded, a resolute expression settling across his features. He smoothed down his wrinkled shirt, straightened his collar, and walked out into the bright morning sun, making his way back toward the imposing main house. The walk felt entirely different today; the grand oak doors no longer felt like an entrance to a sanctuary, but rather the gates of an adversary's fortress. Inside the main house, the hallways were unnaturally quiet, the domestic staff keeping their distance as if sensing a storm. Julian pushed open the heavy mahogany door to his mother's study without knocking. Eleanor was sitting behind her antique mahogany desk, looking immaculate in a tailored cream suit, her dark styled hair framing a face carved from pure ice. She did not gesture for him to sit. "I trust you’ve spent the night recovering from your temporary insanity," Eleanor began, her voice dripping with controlled disdain. "The way you behaved in front of our guests was appalling. You humiliated me, Julian. You humiliated our family name over a servant's duties." Julian did not flinch. He walked slowly across the Persian rug and stopped in front of her desk, looking down at her with a calm detachment that completely derailed her script. "Her name is Clara. She is my wife, and the mother of my child. She is not a servant, Mother, and I will never allow you to treat her as one again." Eleanor slammed her pen down on the blotter, her facade cracking slightly as genuine anger flashed in her eyes. "You owe your entire life, your education, your position to this family! Without me, you are nothing. That woman trapped you with a baby, and you’re throwing it all away for a kitchen maid?" Julian felt a cold surge of finality wash over him. The illusion was gone completely. "I am resigning from the firm, effective immediately," Julian said quietly, his voice echoing in the silent room. "We are moving out today. And if you ever want to see your grandson, you will learn to treat his mother with absolute respect."
