Chapter 4

The tension in the opulent living room reached a suffocating crescendo as Maya continued pointing upward. The little girl's arm remained rigid, her small index finger aimed precisely at the stone angel perched upon the massive marble mantelpiece.
Julian Vance turned around abruptly, his usual calm demeanor fracturing into a look of absolute, unadulterated shock. The color drained from his tanned face, leaving him looking sickly gray beneath the warm glow of the chandelier. He took an instinctive half-step backward, his polished leather shoes scraping sharply against the marble floor.
Maya tilted her head up, her young voice cutting clearly through the breathless quiet of the room.
"She fed it diamonds!" Maya announced simply, her tone entirely devoid of malice or understanding of the social bomb she had just dropped.
The guests exchanged bewildered glances. "Fed what diamonds?" a prominent investor muttered, leaning forward.
Eleanor froze, the rage instantly draining from her face, replaced by a cold, creeping horror. She stared at her daughter, then slowly turned her head toward the mantelpiece. The angel statue was heavy, ancient, and hollow inside—a decorative antique piece that Julian had insisted on purchasing at a high-end European auction three years ago, claiming it brought good fortune to the estate.
Julian’s hand shot out as if to stop time, his voice cracking in a desperate command. "Maya, stop talking nonsense right now! Go to your room!"

But it was too late. Elena, watching closely from beside her cleaning cart, connected the pieces with startling clarity. The missing necklace had not been stolen by an outsider. It had not been slipped into her pockets by some disgruntled servant. The truth was far darker, wrapped in deceit, insurance fraud, and family betrayal.
Eleanor’s knees buckled slightly, the shimmering gold fabric of her gown whispering against the floor as she took a trembling step toward the fireplace. The illusion of their flawless, wealthy life was peeling away like rotten wallpaper, revealing the moldering rot underneath. The silence of the room was no longer the quiet before a storm; it was the deafening roar of a secret finally breaking free from its prison.
