Chapter 8: The Shadow in the Bedroom

The second-floor hallway of the Sterling estate was perpetually dim, lit only by low-wattage sconces that cast amber pools of light across the floral wallpaper. Eleanor walked up the grand staircase with deliberate, measured steps, the beige clutch tucked securely under her arm. Mark trailed a few paces behind her, his footsteps hesitant, like a man walking toward his own execution. When they reached the heavy mahogany door of Arthur’s master suite, Eleanor didn't knock. She simply turned the brass handle and pushed the door open, stepping into the quiet, antiseptic-smelling room.
Arthur Sterling lay propped up against a stack of feather pillows in a massive four-poster bed. His silver hair was brushed neatly, and a cashmere blanket was draped over his frail legs. Despite his stroke, his pale blue eyes remained sharp and calculating, tracking their entrance with a cold, assessing intelligence. A nurse’s cart sat near the window, empty now that Julianna had abandoned her post. Arthur tried to speak, his voice emerging as a dry, gravelly rasp. "You... you shouldn't be in here without Julianna."
Eleanor walked to the side of the bed, stopping just out of his reach. She placed the beige clutch on the bedside table, unzipped it, and pulled out the cream stationery letter, laying it flat across the cashmere blanket right in front of him. Arthur’s eyes widened slightly, the color draining from his sallow cheeks as he recognized the document he thought was safely locked away in Julianna’s possession. He tried to lift a trembling hand toward the paper, but his fingers curled limply against the fabric.
"Looking for this, Arthur?" Eleanor asked, her voice entirely devoid of warmth. "Julianna sends her regards. She's currently halfway to the state line, having realized that blackmailing me was a losing game."
Arthur swallowed hard, his throat working convulsively. He looked past Eleanor to where Mark stood near the doorway, his head bowed in shame. "You... you fools," Arthur rasped, his voice gaining a sudden, desperate strength. "You don't understand what that letter represents. If the board finds out about those offshore accounts, the entire estate is liquidated. The foundation, the endowments, the legacy—it all collapses into federal receivership. I did what I had to do to protect this family."
"You did what you had to do to protect your ego and your empire, using my name as a shield without my consent," Eleanor corrected him, leaning down slightly so her face was level with his. "For twenty years, I played the dutiful corporate wife, attending your charity galas, smiling for the cameras, and swallowing my own ambitions to keep the peace in this house. And all the while, you and my husband treated me as a legal liability waiting to be exploited."

Arthur glared at her, the old tyrant flashing briefly through his paralyzed frame. "You owe everything you have to this family, Eleanor. Without the Sterling name, you are nothing."
"That is where you are wrong, Arthur," Eleanor said softly, standing up straight and smoothing her jacket. "The Sterling name is built on paper, and paper burns very easily. Tomorrow morning, I am calling an emergency meeting of the board of directors. And I will be presenting them with a very different story than the one you prepared."
