Chapter 4 - The Unraveling of the Crown

“You?” Arthur choked out, the word escaping his throat in a breathless rasp as he stared at Sarah in sheer horror. “That’s impossible. My mother said your side of the family was bought out and legally severed from the estate decades ago. She showed me the documents.”
“Your mother lies, Arthur,” Sarah said, her voice dropping into a register of icy calm that was far more terrifying than her previous fury. She stepped away from the process server and walked slowly toward the center of the mahogany floor, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with her daughter Clara. The contrast between the bride in her pristine white gown and the mother in her sleek teal dress was striking, two generations of resilient women united against a common tyrant.
Eleanor’s posture stiffened even further, though a fine sheen of sweat now glistened across her powdered forehead. She raised her chin with defiant arrogance, refusing to yield an inch of ground. “I did what was necessary to protect the legacy of this family from weak-willed fools and charity cases. Your grandfather was senile when he signed those papers, Sarah. He didn't know what he was doing.”
“He knew exactly what he was doing when he left the foundation to the firstborn, Eleanor,” Mr. Henderson interjected, stepping closer to the two women. He tapped the yellowed parchment in his hand. “The forensic audit completed yesterday confirms that the signature on the 1994 buyout document was traced. It was a forgery. A federal offense with no statute of limitations.”
Arthur staggered backward, his hand catching the edge of a decorated dining table and sending a crystal water glass crashing to the floor. The sound of shattering glass echoed like a gunshot through the silent ballroom. He stared at his mother, his face pale and contorted with betrayal. “You lied to me. Every single corporate merger, every property acquisition, the entire foundation of our wealth… it’s all built on a criminal fraud?”
“Don’t be an idiot, Arthur!” Eleanor snapped, finally losing a fraction of her ironclad composure. Her voice rose in sharp agitation. “I built this empire from the ashes after your father gambled away our initial holdings. I secured our future! If I hadn't forged those papers, we would be living in a tenement right now!”
Clara felt a cold wave of nausea wash over her stomach. She looked at Arthur, the man she had promised to love and honor just two hours ago, and realized she didn't know him at all. Was he an innocent victim in this deception, or had he known about the stolen inheritance all along? The warmth of the wedding day was entirely gone, replaced by the bitter chill of betrayal.
“Is that why you proposed to me, Arthur?” Clara asked, her voice cracking with suppressed emotion. She took a slow step away from him, the distance between them feeling like a yawning chasm. “Did you know about the charter? Was this wedding just a calculated corporate takeover disguised as a romance?”

Arthur opened his mouth to speak, his eyes darting frantically between his furious mother and his devastated bride, but before a single word could escape his lips, little Lily let out a sharp, piercing wail from the bench, pointing a trembling finger toward the service doors at the back of the room.
