Chapter 13: The Strategy Session

The evening shadows lengthened across the study of Julian’s home, casting long, dark stripes across the mahogany desk where three files lay open. The wedding reception had concluded hours ago, and Lily was now fast asleep upstairs in her own bedroom, her breathing deep and rhythmic after a long day of emotional turbulence. Downstairs, the newly married couple sat in quiet consultation with Lieutenant Colonel Vance’s appointed military defense attorney, Marcus Sterling.
Marcus adjusted his glasses, scanning a legal brief with practiced intensity. He was a seasoned military JAG officer who had handled dozens of complex domestic disputes involving service members.
“She’s playing a very aggressive game, Julian,” Marcus said, looking up from the documents. “Her filing relies heavily on claiming that your deployment history compromised your domestic stability, and she’s leveraging the technicality of the original guardianship agreement.”
“That agreement was signed under duress while my battalion was on two hours' notice for deployment,” Julian said, his voice hard with frustration. “She packed her bags forty-eight hours before my bird took off, leaving an infant in my barracks quarters with a note on the nightstand.”
“I know the history, Julian, and the military tribunal documented it extensively at the time,” Marcus replied calmly, holding up a hand to steady the captain. “However, civil family court operates under a different set of rules. They don't automatically defer to military operational history unless we force the issue. That’s where Clara comes in.”
Clara, sitting quietly in the wingback chair across from the desk, looked up. “Me?”
“Yes, Clara,” Marcus said, leaning forward. “Her petition specifically targets your entry into the household, framing your marriage as a destabilizing domestic change. To counter that, we need to demonstrate the exact opposite. We need character affidavits, school records, medical logs, and daily journals showing that your presence has brought profound stability, emotional health, and consistent care to Lily’s life over the past two years.”
Clara felt a heavy sense of responsibility settle over her shoulders, but there was no hesitation in her heart. “I have every drawing she’s made me, every school report card, and every milestone documented. If the court wants proof of my role in Lily’s life, I can provide a comprehensive record.”

Julian reached across the desk, taking Clara’s hand in his. His grip was warm and grounding. “We will fight this legally, publicly, and thoroughly. We won't let her uproot the home we’ve built.”
Marcus nodded, closing the files with a crisp snap. “Then our strategy is set. We file our response tomorrow morning, demanding supervised visitation evaluation based on her history of abandonment, and we put forward Clara’s legal petition for step-parent adoption concurrently.”
