Chapter 11: The Tarmac Race

The black armored SUV roared down the empty interstate highway, its powerful engine screaming as Moretti pushed the vehicle well past legal speed limits. The northern suburbs blurred past in a chaotic rush of grey concrete and towering pine trees. In the passenger seat, Elena gripped the armrest so tightly her knuckles turned bone-white, her eyes fixed on the distant horizon where the grey hangars of the private municipal airstrip loomed against the pale morning sky.

"He knows we're coming," Elena said, her voice shaking slightly despite her attempts to stay composed. "If he has Lily, he'll use her as leverage to get through airport security."

"He won't get past the perimeter," Moretti replied coldly, keeping his eyes locked on the road ahead. "Victor’s tactical units are already in position, sealing off every access point to the airfield."

As they crested a final rise in the highway, the sprawling expanse of the private airfield came into view. A sleek, twin-engine private jet sat idling on the tarmac near hangar four, its turbine engines whining with a high-pitched shriek as they prepared for takeoff. Several hundred yards away, two of Moretti’s black security SUVs were already moving in a pincer formation across the open field, cutting off the jet's path to the main runway.

Moretti slammed on the brakes, sliding the heavy SUV to a sharp halt right behind Victor’s tactical vehicle near the edge of the chain-link security fence. He killed the engine and threw his door open, drawing his sidearm from its holster in one fluid motion.

"Stay in the vehicle, Elena," Moretti ordered.

"Like hell I will," Elena shot back, kicking her door open before he could argue further. "That's my daughter out there!"

Moretti didn't waste time debating. He led the charge toward the open gap in the chain-link fence, sprinting across the cold asphalt of the tarmac toward the idling jet.

From the boarding stairs of the private aircraft, Marcus Vance appeared. He was dressed in a dark tactical jacket, holding three-year-old Lily firmly in his left arm. The toddler looked bewildered and frightened, her bright yellow dress contrasting sharply with the bleak industrial backdrop of the airfield, though she wasn't crying—she simply stared at the approaching figures with wide, uncomprehending eyes. In Vance’s right hand, a heavy black pistol was pressed lightly against the side of the little girl's head.

"Stop right there, Moretti!" Vance screamed over the deafening whine of the jet engines, his face twisted in a mixture of rage and desperation. "Take one more step, and the girl takes the bullet!"

Moretti froze instantly, his boots skidding to a halt on the pavement. Victor and the security team flanked him on both sides, their weapons raised but holding their fire to avoid hitting the child.
