Chapter 4 - The Cellar Confession

I didn't reach for my gun. If Vivien walked in and saw me standing over the medicine cabinet with a drawn weapon, the game was over before I knew who her partner was.

Instead, in less than two seconds, I pocketed two ampoules from the cabinet, locked it, and stepped silently behind the heavy velvet drapes covering the balcony doors.

The bedroom door creaked open.

Through a hairline gap in the velvet fabric, I watched a figure slip into the room.

It wasn't Sister Agnes. And it wasn't Vivien.

It was Dr. Julian Vance—the brilliant young neurologist from St. Jude’s Hospital who had been overseeing my mother’s home care for the last ten weeks. Luca Vance’s younger brother.

My fists clenched so hard my nails dug into my palms. The entire Vance family—our lawyers, our doctors, our bodyguards—had rotted from the inside out.

Julian walked swiftly to the IV stand. He pulled a pre-filled syringe from his white coat pocket, uncapped the needle with his teeth, and inserted it into my mother’s saline drip port.

Just as his thumb touched the plunger, I stepped out from behind the curtains and pressed the cold steel barrel of my suppressed pistol directly behind his right ear.

"Push that plunger down a millimeter, Julian, and they'll be mopping your brains off my mother’s Persian rug," I whispered.

Julian froze. A whimper escaped his throat, and droplets of sweat instantly beaded on his forehead.

"L-Lorenzo," he stammered, his hands shaking violently. "You're supposed to be—"

"Dead? Paralyzed? Asleep?" I plucked the syringe from his trembling fingers and capped it. "Unplug the whole IV bag. Right now. Put a clean saline bag on the pole."

With the gun pressed against his temple, Julian fumbled with the medical stand, swapping the tainted bag for a factory-sealed pouch from the bottom drawer.

Once it was done, I glanced at my mother. She blinked once at me—a silent thank you that hit me harder than any words ever could.

Twenty minutes later, Julian was tied to a steel chair in the sub-basement wine cellar right next to his bleeding brother, Luca.

I stood in front of them under a single hanging bulb, holding a heavy iron crowbar. Rocco stood by the heavy oak door, arms crossed.

"Let’s make this very simple," I said calmly, resting the crowbar on my shoulder. "I already have the kitchen video from three months ago. I have the tetrodotoxin from my wine and my mother's IV. And I have Elena and Mia safely hidden where none of you will ever reach them."

Luca spat blood onto the concrete floor, glaring at me. "Go to hell, Duca. You're a dinosaur. Your family’s empire is already carved up."

I didn't argue with Luca. Instead, I turned to the doctor, who was hyperventilating, and placed the cold iron tip of the crowbar on his kneecap—his surgeon’s hands resting right beside it.

"Wait! Wait, stop!" Julian screamed before I even applied pressure. "I'll talk! Luca forced me into it! They had gambling debts on me—millions!"

"Shut up, Julian!" Luca roared, straining against his zip-ties.

"Who is 'they'?" I asked Julian softly. "Who is the man in the fedora with the scarred hand and the platinum Patek watch?"

Julian sobbed, tears and snot running down his face. "Matteo! It's Matteo Moretti—no, not the doctor! Matteo Conti!"

The room went dead silent.

Rocco took a step forward, his face draining of color. "Boss... Matteo Conti died in the Marseille harbor fire six years ago."

"He didn't die!" Julian wept hysterically. "The fire burned his left hand and half his neck, that's why he wears the scar! And Vivien isn't Vivien Laurent from Paris!"

My stomach twisted into a violent knot. "Who is she?"

"She’s his sister!" Julian cried out. "She’s Sofia Conti! She spent two years getting plastic surgery in Switzerland after your father bankrupted their family shipping cartel! She didn't come here to marry you for your money, Lorenzo—she came here to paralyze your entire bloodline and force you to watch while Matteo executes a hostile takeover tomorrow morning at the board meeting!"

My phone vibrated in my pocket. I pulled it out and saw a text alert from our corporate bank in Zurich:
