The rain had turned to a freezing sleet by the time Vincent’s car crossed the Connecticut state line and pulled into the gritty, industrial sprawl surrounding Hartford. The landscape was a depressing maze of rusted corrugated metal warehouses, abandoned brick factories with broken windows, and rows of identical, soot-stained row houses that smelled of damp asphalt and chemical exhaust.
This was the world Clara had spent her entire life trying to escape, and the world Rose had apparently been dumped into by Eleanor’s calculated bureaucratic cruelty.
