Chapter 10: The Terms of Surrender

The black sedan carrying Sterling Brooks idled in the grand driveway while Julian stood waiting on the stone steps of the front entrance. He had refused to let the attorney inside the house, drawing a firm boundary that communicated his absolute control over the situation. Brooks stepped out of the vehicle, smoothing down his expensive gray suit and carrying a slim leather briefcase. He looked slightly uneasy as he approached the stern, towering figure of the Sterling CEO.

"Mr. Sterling. Thank you for making time to meet with me on such short notice," Brooks began, attempting a professional, disarming smile that failed to reach his eyes.

"Cut the pleasantries, Mr. Brooks," Julian replied flatly, his voice cutting through the crisp afternoon air. "You are standing on private property because your client realized her extortion attempt failed. State your business and be brief."

Brooks cleared his throat, adjusting his posture under Julian’s piercing glare. "My client recognizes that the family court has chosen to seal the records. However, protracted litigation serves neither party's long-term interests. Mrs. Sterling is prepared to sign an immediate, uncontested divorce decree, waiving all claims to ongoing spousal support, provided certain financial concessions are met regarding her initial settlement package."

Julian crossed his arms, his dark eyes narrowing. "Let me be entirely clear, Mr. Brooks. Vanessa gets the exact terms outlined in our prenuptial agreement—not a single cent more, and not a single luxury asset outside of her personal belongings. If she signs right now, today, I will not pursue criminal charges against her for corporate fraud regarding those unauthorized withdrawals she made from our joint philanthropic accounts last month."

Brooks blinked in genuine shock. He had assumed Julian would negotiate upward to buy peace and silence, but the CEO was holding all the cards and playing an uncompromising hand. "Mr. Sterling, surely we can find some middle ground—"

"There is no middle ground," Julian interrupted, his voice dropping an octave with absolute finality. "Your client attempted to frame a five-year-old child for her own recklessness and then tried to weaponize the courts with fabricated claims. She is lucky she is walking away with her dignity intact. Take the offer back to her. She has until sundown to sign the papers at my attorney's office. If the deadline passes, I lift the restrictions on the financial audits, and she can explain her debts to a federal prosecutor."

Brooks stared at Julian for a long moment, reading the terrifying clarity in the man’s eyes. He realized there was no bluff here; Julian Sterling was a man who finished what he started, and crossing him further would only result in total ruin for Vanessa.

"I will communicate your terms to Mrs. Sterling immediately," Brooks said stiffly, turning on his heel and walking back toward his vehicle.

As the sedan reversed down the driveway and disappeared out the security gates, Julian let out a slow, steady breath. The final obstacle in clearing his home of its toxic past was moments away from being permanently removed. He turned back toward the mansion, walking through the open double doors into the foyer where his daughter and Clara were waiting. The shadow that had hung over the house for a decade was finally dissolving into the fading afternoon light.
