Chapter 3 - The Ghost at the Emergency Doors

The taxi dropped Clara off at the brightly lit entrance of St. Jude’s Hospital with a screech of worn brake pads. She didn't wait for the driver to help with the door; she shoved it open with her shoulder, her bare feet sliding into a pair of scratchy rubber slippers a kind nurse had handed her before discharging her earlier that day. The twelve-dollar bill burned like a coal in her cardigan pocket. Holding Leo tightly against her chest, she sprinted toward the automatic sliding doors, her breath coming in ragged gasps. The hospital lobby was a chaotic blur of rushing nurses, blaring monitors, and anxious families.

She scanned the waiting area frantically, searching for a familiar face among the sea of strangers. That was when she saw him. Standing near the trauma intake desk was a tall man in a sharp black suit and a matching black shirt. Clara froze, her heart skipping a beat. It wasn't Julian—this man was broader, with a military-straight posture and silver threading at his temples. He was holding a thick manila folder tied with a heavy gold seal. Next to him stood a man in full military dress uniform, his chest adorned with medals that caught the harsh fluorescent light.

Clara took a cautious step forward, her hospital gown fluttering in the draft from the revolving doors. She recognized the folder instantly. It bore the crest of the Vance family trust—a legacy she thought had burned down in a mysterious fire twenty years ago. The military officer extended his hand, passing the heavy document over to the man in the black suit with a solemn, respectful nod.

The man in the black suit accepted the papers, his face pale and drawn as he flipped open the cover to read the embossed text inside. He stumbled backward half a step, colliding sharply with a stainless-steel trash receptacle. The sound echoed loudly across the quiet waiting room, drawing the sharp gazes of the triage nurses behind the high counter.

Clara stepped out from behind a concrete pillar, her eyes locked onto the man in the black suit. She didn't know his name, but she recognized the exact fabric of his suit—it was the twin of Julian’s favorite designer label. The man looked up from the golden seal, his eyes widening in sheer, unadulterated horror as he stared directly at Clara and the newborn baby in her arms.

“That’s my car! No, it never was!” the man in the black suit blurted out, his voice cracking with a sudden, violent surge of panic.

Before Clara could demand answers about her father, the trauma doors swung open with a pneumatic hiss. A team of rushed doctors pushed a rolling gurney into the hallway, surrounded by tangled IV lines and blinking heart monitors. Clara caught a glimpse of a familiar plaid shirt and a weathered hand dangling off the edge of the mattress. It was her father. But the monitor beside him gave a long, unbroken, terrifying flatline tone.

The man in the black suit dropped the golden-sealed folder onto the polished linoleum floor, scattering pages of legal deeds and bank transfers across the tiles. He turned and bolted toward the exit doors, knocking over a stack of informational brochures as he disappeared into the night. Clara screamed her father's name, stepping forward to follow, but a heavy hand landed gently on her shoulder, stopping her dead in her tracks.
