Chapter 11 - The Cabin Siege

The blood drained instantly from my face as the heavy thud echoed down from the wooden floorboards above our heads. My father reacted with instantaneous precision, grabbing the hunting rifle leaning against the fireplace and flicking off the safety with a sharp, metallic click. He motioned frantically for me to stay low beside the armchair, his eyes locked on the old wooden staircase leading up to the main floor of the hunting cabin. The rhythmic crunch of heavy boots drawing closer across the gravel driveway outside sent a spike of pure adrenaline straight through my veins, and I instinctively pulled my newborn baby tightly against my chest, shielding him with my entire body.

“They found us,” I whispered, my voice trembling despite my earlier resolve as I stared at the dark, narrow stairwell.

“Stay behind the brick hearth, Clara. No matter what happens, do not make a sound,” my father commanded in a low, fierce whisper, positioning himself directly at the base of the stairs with the rifle raised and ready.

Above us, the heavy front door creaked open with a loud, protesting groan, letting in a sharp gust of freezing night air that chilled the basement instantly. Heavy footsteps began pacing methodically across the wooden floorboards upstairs, checking rooms, kicking open closet doors, and systematically tearing the cabin apart. I held my breath, squeezing my eyes shut as every creak of the wood sounded louder than a thunderclap in the quiet subterranean room. The baby shifted slightly in my arms, letting out a tiny, high-pitched squeak that made my heart leap into my throat in sheer terror. I clamped my hand gently over his tiny mouth for a fraction of a second, praying he wouldn't start crying, before letting out a soft sigh of relief as he fell right back into a deep, peaceful sleep.

Suddenly, a heavy boot stepped onto the top stair, followed by the cold, metallic glint of a silenced pistol sliding down the wooden handrail.

“I know you’re down there, old man,” a deep, gravelly voice echoed down the stairwell. “Hand over the girl and the twelve-dollar bill, and maybe we let you walk away from this.”

My father didn't hesitate for a single microsecond; he raised the rifle, locked his sights onto the empty space at the top of the stairs, and pulled the trigger with a deafening roar that shook the entire foundation of the cabin.
