Chapter 7: Protocol in the Balance

The heavy wooden door of Room 412 swung open fully as local police officers, led by a seasoned precinct lieutenant, surged into the room with weapons drawn. The flashing red and blue lights from the patrol cruisers parked below painted rhythmic patterns across the ceiling. The lieutenant took one look at the security guards holding a distressed father, the terrified nurses huddled near the supply cart, and the male nurse kneeling beside a little girl with a cut rubber boot, and immediately barked orders to lower firearms. He recognized the specialized danger signaled by the heavy atmosphere in the room.
Julian stood up slowly, keeping his movements visible and non-threatening. He wiped a sheen of cold sweat from his forehead with the back of his bare forearm, leaving his blue gloves intact. He stepped toward the lieutenant, speaking in a rapid, controlled whisper to avoid alarming Lily further. He explained that the child was wearing a sophisticated remote-controlled payload concealed inside a heavy-duty rubber boot, and warned that standard disarming tools would likely trigger the device’s internal anti-tamper mechanisms.
The lieutenant listened intently, his expression darkening with every detail. He immediately signaled for his radio operator to clear the immediate floor and request an emergency bomb squad detail from the state police division, alongside a specialized electronic countermeasures unit. However, Julian shook his head, explaining that they did not have thirty minutes to wait for a full tactical payload team to arrive from downtown. The thermal sensors inside the device were climbing into a critical threshold, indicating that the internal battery was overheating rapidly.
Thomas managed to push himself up from the floor, his legs wobbling beneath him. He rasped out a warning, telling the lieutenant that the device was linked to a proximity timer controlled by the men who had just fled down the service stairwell. If the signal dropped completely or if the thermal casing reached critical mass without a proper cryptographic handshake, the device would detonate automatically. The gravity of the revelation silenced the entire room; even the hardened police officers exchanged grim, uncertain glances.

The senior female nurse moved back to Lily’s side, kneeling down to offer a comforting touch and a gentle word. She adjusted the blanket around the little girl’s shoulders, shielding her from the harsh glare of the police flashlights. Lily leaned into the nurse’s shoulder, her intense crying subsiding into small, exhausted sniffles. Her dark rubber boots remained the focal point of the room, now torn open to reveal the humming nightmare nestled against her shin.
Julian looked down at the medical shears still resting on the small tray beside the bed. He realized that waiting meant certain disaster. He had spent five years working as a combat medic before transitioning to civilian nursing, a background he rarely discussed with his colleagues. He recognized the specific wiring schematic visible beneath the torn rubber; it was a modified surplus military relay, similar to devices he had disarmed in the field years ago. He turned to the lieutenant and stated quietly that he was going to attempt a manual bypass.
