Chapter 1

The air in the master bedroom tasted faintly of chilled linen and the metallic tang of old fear. Jacob stood frozen by the edge of the mattress, his tailored grey suit feeling suddenly too heavy for his shoulders, the blue silk tie pressing against a throat gone entirely dry. Beneath the dark blue blanket, Megan’s legs bore the stark, purple-and-yellow signatures of deliberate violence. Her blonde hair was tangled against the white pillow, framing a face where a fresh, swelling contusion marred her left cheekbone.
Just seconds earlier, her soft plea—*Jake, please don't!*—had shattered the quiet morning. Now, the silence rushed back in, thick and suffocating. Jacob stared down at his wife, his chest heaving as sweat gathered along his hairline. His mouth remained slightly open, breath hitching in his throat.
"Megan... Who did this??" he demanded, his voice cracking with a raw disbelief that seemed too fragile to contain the rage building behind his ribs.
Before Megan could answer, a soft, deliberate rustle of silk drew Jacob’s gaze toward the doorway. There stood his mother, Eleanor, her silver hair impeccably gathered into a tight updo. She wore a high-necked gold silk dress that caught the morning light, a heavy double-strand of pearls resting against her collarbone. In her gloved right hand, she clutched a structured black leather handbag by its short handles, holding it against her waist with absolute, unyielding composure. Directly behind her in the hallway, the framed American flag hung straight and severe against the pale drywall, a silent emblem of duty and order in a house that had suddenly devolved into chaos.
Megan shuddered, her breath catching as she pushed herself up with trembling arms. Ignoring the pain, she reached out, her fingers catching the fabric of Jacob’s grey lapel as she pulled herself into a desperate embrace. Sobs wracked her frame, muffled against his chest, her fingernails—streaked with dried earth—scratching faintly at his suit jacket.
"She didn't just do it to me..." Megan wept, her voice trembling with a terrifying urgency. "Look at your son's arms!"
Jacob’s eyes widened further, his mind racing back to seven-year-old Toby asleep down the hall.
Eleanor shifted her weight slightly, the gold silk whispering against the doorframe. Her grip on the black handbag tightened until her knuckles turned white.

"The boy needed to learn discipline, Jacob!" Eleanor declared, her voice ringing out with cold, absolute authority. "Call 911 right now!"
Jacob stood paralyzed between two worlds, the gold-clad matriarch of his family and the bruised woman clinging to his chest. The rot at the core of their perfect suburban life had finally broken through the floorboards.
