Chapter 10 - The Second Briefcase

Clara gripped the brass doorknob, her knuckles turning white, and pulled the heavy oak door open just a few inches. The freezing night air rushed into the hallway, carrying the scent of wet pine and distant woodsmoke. Standing on the porch was a man in his late forties, wearing a tailored charcoal overcoat and a dark wool scarf wrapped neatly around his neck.
"Can I help you?" Clara asked, her voice sharp and guarded as she blocked the threshold with her body. "If you're looking for the police, they just left."
The man didn't smile. He reached inside his coat and pulled out a heavy metal badge, holding it up to the porch light. "My name is Special Agent Miller, Federal Bureau of Investigation, White-Collar Crime Division. I'm looking for Arthur and Eleanor Sinclair."
Clara felt the breath catch in her throat. The mention of the FBI sent a cold shockwave straight down her spine. "My parents are elderly, and they've had a very difficult evening. Whatever Marcus and Patricia did, it's already being handled by the state elder protection division."
Agent Miller lowered his badge with a calm, professional demeanor. "I'm not here about Marcus or Patricia's local real estate fraud, Ms. Sinclair. I'm here about a much larger corporate entity that your brother's construction company was secretly fronting for over the last three years."
From the dining room doorway, Arthur appeared, leaning heavily against the wall for support, his face pale and strained. "Who is it, Clara? What does the federal government want with us now?"
Agent Miller stepped past Clara without waiting for an invitation, entering the warm foyer and scanning the traditional holiday decorations with clinical detachment. He set a heavy leather briefcase down on the wooden console table near the front door.
"Mr. Sinclair, I apologize for the late hour, but time is critical," Agent Miller said, pulling a manila folder from his coat. "Your son Marcus wasn't just bailing out a failing construction business. For the past thirty-six months, his company served as the primary domestic laundering vehicle for an international shell corporation linked to offshore tax evasion totaling over four million dollars."
Eleanor dropped her napkin onto the dining room floor, her hands flying to her mouth as she let out a strangled gasp. "Four million dollars? Marcus? Our son doesn't even know how to balance a checkbook without an accountant!"
"He didn't run the operation, Mrs. Sinclair. He just lent his name and your family's properties as collateral to secure the offshore transfer letters," Agent Miller explained, opening the folder to reveal dozens of bank statements bearing Marcus's signature. "And according to the primary routing records seized during a raid on his corporate office an hour ago, the ultimate beneficiary address listed on the primary holding account isn't Marcus's office. It's this house."
Clara stepped back, her eyes widening in sheer horror as the pieces fell into place with terrifying speed. "This house? Why would an international laundering syndicate use our family home as a primary beneficiary address?"
Agent Miller looked up, his eyes meeting Clara's with grave seriousness. "Because three months ago, someone filed a secret secondary mortgage on this property under your father's name, borrowing six hundred thousand dollars in cash against the equity—cash that was immediately wired to the Cayman Islands."

Arthur clutched his chest, his knees buckling beneath him as the full weight of the federal revelation crashed down upon his frail body.
