Chapter 11

The air inside the cramped motel room was thick with the scent of cheap bleach, damp carpet, and stale cigarette smoke.
Jax held his position in the shattered doorway, the heavy black pistol steady in his right hand, aimed squarely at Thorne’s forehead.
"Let her go, Thorne," Jax said, his voice a low, gravelly warning that vibrated through the small room. "She's got nothing to do with this anymore."
Thorne laughed, pressing the barrel of his weapon harder against Sarah’s temple, eliciting a soft hiss of pain from the woman on the bed.
"You're out of your mind if you think I'm walking away empty-handed," Thorne snarled, his eyes wild with adrenaline and desperate ambition. "She knows where the drive is hidden. The moment she gives me the location, you both get a clean bullet."
Sarah slowly turned her head, ignoring the cold steel pressed against her skin, and looked past Thorne to lock eyes with Jax.
Her sunken hazel eyes—the exact same eyes as Leo’s—conveyed a silent, devastating message.
Protect our son.
Jax shook his head imperceptibly, his jaw clenching so hard a muscle twitched violently in his cheek.
"Don't do it, Sarah," Jax warned softly.
"She's already done it, old man," Thorne barked, shifting his weight. "Now drop the gun or I pull the trigger right now!"
Before Thorne could tighten his finger on the trigger, a sudden commotion erupted outside the open motel door on the wooden walkway.
"Jax! Mom!"
The frantic, high-pitched shout cut through the tension like a razor.
Thorne’s head snapped toward the doorway in confusion for a fraction of a second—just long enough for Jax to seize the advantage.
Jax didn't hesitate. He pulled the trigger, firing a single, precise shot that struck the wall right beside Thorne's head, showering the assassin in drywall dust and blinding him momentarily.
Sarah reacted with desperate strength, throwing her legs up and slamming her booted foot directly into Thorne's knee joint.
Thorne roared in pain, stumbling sideways and losing his balance as Jax lunged across the small room, tackling him hard to the floor.
The two heavy men crashed into a cheap wooden nightstand, splintering it into kindling as they grappled for control of Thorne's weapon.
"Get out!" Jax roared to Sarah, pinning Thorne's arm to the carpet with his knee while delivering a brutal blow to the assassin's jaw.
Sarah scrambled off the bed, coughing violently, just as little Leo burst through the shattered doorway, running straight into his mother's open arms.
"Mom! Mom, you're okay!" Leo sobbed, burying his face in her worn flannel shirt.
"I'm here, baby, I'm here," Sarah whispered, clutching her son fiercely to her chest as tears streamed down her face.
On the floor, Thorne managed to wrench his arm free, driving a heavy tactical knife from his vest straight toward Jax's ribs.
Jax twisted aside at the last possible millisecond, the blade tearing through the leather of his vest and grazing his skin, drawing a hot line of blood.
Jax countered with a devastating elbow strike to Thorne’s temple, sending the assassin limp into unconsciousness.
Heavy panting filled the room as Jax stood up slowly, wiping blood from his side, turning to look at Sarah and Leo standing together in the corner.
"We need to move," Jax said, his voice urgent. "Vance and his main team are right behind us. They'll be here in two minutes."

Sarah looked up at Jax, her eyes filled with a mixture of profound love, fear, and a dark revelation she had kept hidden for a decade.
"They aren't just coming for us, Jax," Sarah whispered, clutching a small silver flash drive in her trembling hand. "They're coming for what's inside this drive. And it implicates half the government."
