Chapter 1 - The Broken Classroom

The fluorescent lights of the classroom hummed with a sterile, maddening frequency, casting a pale glow over the rows of scarred wooden desks. Leo stood by his desk, his small shoulders shaking as a single tear traced a clean path through the dust on his pale cheek. He held his hands up defensively, fingers curled inward, clutching a piece of paper like a lifeline.

"Uh..." Leo’s voice was barely a whisper, broken by the raw panic of a child caught between absolute terror and a fragile, desperate hope.

Across the room, Mrs. Gable, the school secretary, planted her hands firmly on her hips, her lips pressed into a hard, unforgiving line. Her badge read 'MARTHA' in bold black letters, but to Leo, she was simply the warden of his misery.

"I don't care what your excuse is, young man," Martha snapped, her voice cutting through the heavy air like a rusty saw. "You cannot just walk out of the playground and into a restricted wing. Who gave you permission to leave?"

"I didn't leave," Leo whispered, his big hazel eyes swimming with unshed tears. "I was looking for him. I had to."

"Looking for who? That imaginary friend you keep drawing in your notebooks? Look at me when I speak to you!" Martha stepped closer, her short brown hair bouncing with rigid disapproval as she reached out to grab his old, oversized jacket by the collar.

Before her fingers could connect with the frayed fabric, the heavy oak door of the classroom swung open with a resounding bang that rattled the windowpanes.

A tall man filled the doorway, blocking out the harsh afternoon sun. It was Jax. At forty-eight, he was a mountain of hardened muscle and shadows, his face half-hidden behind a thick, unkempt dark beard and long hair that fell over the shoulders of a heavy leather vest. His arms were a chaotic canvas of blue and black tattoos, the ink telling stories of barroom brawls and lonely highways. He tried to keep his expression tough, jaw clenched and eyes narrowed, but a sudden, subtle twitch in his left cheek betrayed his internal turmoil.

"Get your hands off the kid," Jax growled, his voice a gravelly baritone that vibrated straight through the floorboards.

Martha spun around, her eyes widening in immediate suspicion as she took in the biker’s intimidating stature and scuffed boots. "And just who do you think you are? You can't just barge in here. I'm calling the police!"

"Go ahead," Jax said slowly, taking a heavy step forward and fixing her with a gaze so intense it made her step back. He reached into his vest pocket, his large, calloused fingers trembling ever so slightly as they pulled out a crumpled, faded photograph. He tossed it onto the nearest desk, right between them. "Tell the cops the guy in that picture is here to pick up his son."

Leo stared at the photo, his breath catching in his throat as Jax pulled a small, folded piece of paper from his pocket and laid it right beside it.
