Chapter 8: The Digital Fuse

Arthur turned and walked down the hallway toward the front entrance without another word. The heavy front door opened with a soft click and closed behind him, leaving behind only the faint scent of winter air and woodsmoke.

Thomas stood frozen by the desk, his hand hovering inches above the small metallic flash drive resting on the polished wood. The room seemed to shrink around them, the walls closing in as the reality of what Arthur had just handed over sank deep into their bones.

Elena stepped forward, her grey top brushing against the edge of the desk. She reached out with steady fingers, picked up the drive, and plugged it directly into the side port of the tablet. The screen flickered, a string of complex code lines scrolling down the display before a folder menu opened with a quiet chime.

"It's encrypted," Elena muttered, her eyes scanning the alphanumeric file names. "Military-grade PGP encryption. We need a private key to unlock the core directory."

Thomas looked over her shoulder, his brow furrowed as he read the file extensions. "Arthur wouldn't just hand over a dead-end drive. He knew the key. Did he say anything before he left?"

"No," Sarah said from the doorway, her arms crossed tightly over her floral dress as if she were trying to hold herself together by sheer force of will. "He just gave it to you and walked out. Think, Thomas. What did he talk about before the party? Did he mention a date? A badge number?"

Elena’s fingers flew across the tablet's virtual keyboard, trying standard administrative passwords associated with Station 4. Each attempt resulted in a sharp, red error message flashing across the screen. Access Denied. Invalid Key.

"We don't have much time," Elena said, her voice tightening as the tension mounted. "If Lawnix's security team monitors Arthur's movements—and you know they do—they'll realize he visited this address within the hour. They'll send someone to sweep the house before dawn."

Thomas straightened up, his face hardening into the expression he wore when walking into a burning structure where the roof was already beginning to sag. "We need to get the files off this drive and onto a decentralized network before they lock us out of our own local server. Elena, grab the external backup drive from the living room shelf. Sarah, pack a bag for Clara. Just essentials. We're going to my sister's place across the county line."

Sarah didn't move immediately. She looked at her husband, searching his eyes for the honesty she had lost faith in three years ago. "And then what, Thomas? Do we run forever? Every time Lawnix finds out we know something, do we pack a bag and move to the next town?"

"No," Thomas said, his voice dropping into a register that brook no argument. "We don't run this time. Arthur gave us the leverage. Now we use it to finish what we started."
