Chapter 5 - The Alarm at the Center

The electronic shriek of the community center’s security alarm cut through the cool autumn air like a siren, echoing off the aluminum siding of the surrounding houses. Heads turned instantly toward the end of the cul-de-sac, where a strobe light mounted above the brick entrance of the clubhouse began flashing a relentless, blinding white. For a neighborhood that prided itself on absolute predictability, an active alarm at the community center was practically an apocalyptic event.

Evelyn flinched at the sound, her hand instinctively returning to her smartphone as if the device could somehow call off whatever disaster was unfolding down the street. Her carefully maintained composure fractured completely, leaving raw, calculating anxiety in its wake.

"Someone must have triggered the motion sensors on the patio," Evelyn said, her voice strained as she forced the words out. "The landscaping crew probably left a gate unlocked."

Arthur Pendelton didn't look at the community center. He kept his eyes locked squarely on Evelyn’s face, reading every micro-expression with clinical precision.

"Landscaping crew doesn't work on Halloween night, Evelyn," Arthur said quietly. "And motion sensors inside the main office don't trip from patio gates. Someone is inside the administrative records room."

Before Evelyn could formulate a response, Mr. Martinez broke from the group of parents, his face set in a grim line.

"I’m going down there," Mr. Martinez said, turning toward the sound of the alarm. "If someone is in the clubhouse, they might be getting into the physical filing cabinets where the actual property deeds are kept."

"You cannot enter municipal property without board authorization!" Evelyn shouted, taking a sharp step forward, her voice regaining its shrill edge. "That is trespassing! I am ordering you to stay back!"

Arthur stepped directly into her path, blocking her movement with calm, immovable deliberation.

"Let them go, Evelyn," Arthur said, his hand sliding inside his brown jacket to grip something heavy and metallic. "The truth has a funny way of letting itself out when the locks finally rust through."

Evelyn stared at Arthur, her chest heaving as she realized that the physical files in the clubhouse office weren't just property deeds or financial audits; they were the itemized ledger of every bribe, payoff, and suppressed zoning violation that had kept Maple Ridge looking like a paradise on the surface while rotting from the inside out.

"If those files are compromised," Evelyn whispered, her voice trembling with a terrifying mix of fury and fear, "the entire neighborhood value drops to zero by midnight."

Arthur smiled, a cold, humorless expression that mirrored the dark night around them.

"Then I suggest you start praying for a very fast fire," Arthur replied.

As the strobe light from the community center flashed against their faces, the front door of the clubhouse suddenly flew open, and a figure emerged carrying a heavy cardboard banker's box into the moonlight.
