Chapter 10: The Search of the Grounds

The coroner’s van sat idling near the base of the grand staircase, its red hazard lights casting an eerie pulse over the shattered remains of the grandfather clock. Inside the mansion, forensic technicians dusted for fingerprints and photographed the bloodstained lace of Eleanor’s wedding gown. Julian was nowhere to be found. When the backup deputies had inspected the site of his SUV crash along the mountain pass, the vehicle was abandoned, its doors wide open and the driver’s seat empty.

Clara sat in the back sitting room, wrapped in a heavy tartan blanket while a paramedic checked her vitals. She refused medical transport to the hospital, insisting on staying until Julian was apprehended. Mrs. Gable sat beside her, holding a cup of hot tea between her trembling hands as Deputy Tom Miller walked into the room carrying a thick leather-bound ledger.

“We searched the study and found the master safe blown open,” Tom said grimly, placing the ledger on the coffee table. “Marcus Vance’s briefcase was full of forged property transfers and offshore bank account numbers bearing your mother’s signature. It’s an open-and-shut case of financial conspiracy. But Julian has vanished into the woods. With this storm, tracking dogs won’t pick up a scent until dawn.”

Clara looked up from her tea, her green eyes piercing and calm. “He didn't run into the woods to escape, Deputy. He went to the old boathouse by the lake. That’s where my father kept his private ledger before he died, and that’s where Julian hides his passport and emergency cash.”

Tom exchanged a surprised look with Mrs. Gable. “How could you possibly know that, Clara?”

“Mother and I used to explore every corner of this estate,” Clara replied quietly. “Julian thinks he’s smarter than everyone else, but he always underestimates the people he treats like furniture.”

Tom nodded slowly, impressed by the girl’s composure and tactical clarity. He turned to his radio, issuing immediate orders to seal off the perimeter leading down to the lakefront boathouse. Two squads of deputies moved out into the driving rain, their tactical flashlights cutting sweeping arcs through the dense thickets of weeping willows that lined the shore.

Sitting by the dying embers of the fireplace, Clara felt a deep, profound sadness wash over her for the mother she had lost, but alongside the grief burned an unyielding flame of justice. The Vance estate was no longer just a gilded cage of secrets and lies; it was the battleground where she had reclaimed her family’s legacy.
