Chapter 3: The Digital Witness

The silence that followed Elena’s declaration was broken only by the soft, rhythmic hum of the central heating system. Vanessa’s aristocratic facade flickered for a fraction of a second, her eyes darting nervously toward the console table where the smart-home tablet rested in plain sight. A bead of sweat formed near the edge of Vanessa’s meticulously styled blonde hair, betraying the panic beginning to consume her composure. She knew as well as Elena did that technology had no regard for social standing or expensive diamonds; it recorded absolute reality without bias or fear.
"You wouldn't actually go so far as to comb through petty household logs, would you?" Vanessa asked, forcing a brittle, defensive laugh that sounded entirely hollow in the expansive room. "We are family, Elena. Dragging household mechanics into a private family dispute over a childish tantrum reflects poorly on your judgment and your character. Your husband would be deeply ashamed to see you treating his mother with such utter lack of respect."
Elena felt a sharp spike of grief mingled with pure indignation at the mention of her late husband. Vanessa always invoked his memory like a shield whenever her actions were brought into question, weaponizing a mother's eternal sorrow to shield herself from accountability. But tonight, that manipulation tactic failed completely. The memory of her husband’s quiet struggles under the crushing weight of his mother's relentless perfectionism only fueled Elena's resolve. She would not allow Vanessa to break Chloe the same way she had broken her son.

"Do not speak of my husband, Vanessa," Elena said quietly, stepping toward the console table and picking up the sleek black tablet. Her thumb tapped the screen, instantly illuminating the display with a bright, crisp interface. "He spent his entire life trying to escape your toxic need for control. The least I can do is protect his daughter from suffering the exact same fate under this roof."
Vanessa lunged forward with surprising speed for a woman of her age, her manicured hand reaching out to snatch the device from Elena's grasp. But Elena anticipated the movement, sidestepping smoothly and keeping the tablet out of reach. With a few swift, practiced motions, Elena accessed the local cloud storage folder labeled Living Room - Evening Archives. A thumbnail image instantly populated the screen, timestamped precisely twenty minutes prior. It showed the bright yellow sun hat, the gleam of sharp stainless-steel tailoring scissors, and the horrifying reality of Vanessa leaning over the terrified little girl, methodically slicing away her golden hair while muttering harsh reprimands about how Chloe needed to learn her place.
